Fairview, NC: Thelma Florena Nesbitt, age 87, died unexpectedly Tuesday evening, July 17, 2018. Mrs. Nesbitt was born on July 13, 1931, in Philadelphia, PA. She was the daughter of the late August Bertram Weinmann and Thelma (Kauffman) Bernhard, and step-daughter of the Rev.

Leopold Bernhard. Thelma married her adoring husband of 62 years, John Charles (JC) Nesbitt, in New York City on June 24, 1956. Her pride and joy were her two children, Michael D. (Connie) Nesbitt and Debra A. Nesbitt, both of Fairview, NC; one treasured grandson, Dakota M. Nesbitt, two step grandsons, Mark and Shaun Dillon, all of Fairview, NC.

She held a special bond with her sister, Carol Savournin, who lives in Tucson, AZ and has two sons, Gordon and Andrew Lee. Thelma graduated from Berkeley Institute in Brooklyn, NY, and Lenoir Rhyne College in Hickory, NC. She loved being an elementary school teacher in Hickory and Arden, NC, and was later a homemaker and partner on the family dairy farm.

She was a charter member of the Lutheran Church of the Nativity in Arden, and was active in the church as a Sunday School teacher, choir member, and a member of the Church Council. She was a former president of the Good Morning Extension Homemakers Club, an officer in the Lenoir Rhyne Alumni Association, and involved in many community activities including the Friends of the Fairview Library. Thelma was known for her kindness, her gentle and generous spirit, and was a talented artist and cook.

A service to celebrate Thelma’s life will be held at 11:00 am Saturday, July 21, 2018, at the Lutheran Church of the Nativity at 2425 Hendersonville Road, Arden, NC. A reception will follow in the church fellowship hall.
