Thomas Sterling White Jr., known to family and friends as “Pete”, lost his courageous battle with ALS at the age of 59. He was surrounded by his family as he stepped into heaven and stood tall again before his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. A native of Cobb County Georgia, Pete graduated from North Cobb High School where he excelled in baseball and football.
He was awarded an athletic scholarship to Mississippi State University where he played second base for the Diamond Dawgs for four years. Pete was honored and privileged to play under the guidance and leadership of his former coach, Ron Polk. Pete returned to Atlanta to join the family business, A.C. White Relocations, where he was devoted to growing and continuing the success of the company for 36 years.
“Coach” Pete spent many years on the baseball field serving as a coach and mentor for his sons, their friends, and youth within the community. Pete impacted the lives of many boys. Now as men, they returned and recognized him in 2017 by dedicating and naming a baseball field at Oregon Park, in his honor.
Pete was known for his great love for his family. The insurmountable love he had for his sons was a witness to his family and friends. He especially loved becoming “Papa” to his grandsons.
He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Kathy (Mary Katherine Barfield), 2 sons, Sterling (Lee) and Wills, 2 grandchildren (Grayson and Carter), step-mother, Sue, 2 brothers, Tim (Tina) and David (Keyla), sister, Melissa (Patrick), father-in-law and mother-in-law, Doug and Betty Barfield, brother-in-law, Gary Barfield (Dottie), and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Tom. Pete was a member of Roswell Street Baptist Church.
Pete loved his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and was a witness to all of us as he was assured of his healing when he joined his Father in Heaven. Although his absence on earth has left a void in many of our lives; family and friends rejoice in the fact that Pete has been healed and is whole again in Heaven. Family and friends will gather at Mayes Ward-Dobbins Funeral Home for a memorial service on Tuesday, February 26, 2019, at 2:00 pm.
Visitation, with the family, will be held at the funeral home, following the 2:00 pm service. In lieu of flowers a memorial in Pete’s name can be made to Potter and Clay Ministries. This ministry is close and dear to the White family’s heart.
