Vernon “Lefty” Owens, age 89, of Hot Springs, went to be with the Lord Wednesday, June 6, 2018. He was born on March 9, 1929 in Hot Springs, the son of O.E. Owens and Madie Kirkham Owens. He was preceded in death by his parents and four brothers, Jake, Tilford, Olen “Tuffy,” and Glen Owens.

On October 12, 1945, he married Elfreda Kassaw Owens. Vernon was a Christian by faith and a member of Hot Springs Baptist Church. A talented man, Vernon began his professional career as a pitcher for the St. Louis Browns baseball team.

He had an entrepreneurial spirit, leading him to open and manage a successful water well drilling business. He was also a Mason and a member of the Walnut Ridge Masonic Lodge #390. He proudly served his country as a member of the United States Coast Guard.

He is survived by his wife of 72 years, Elfreda Owens of Hot Springs; his son and daughter-in-law, Roger and Linda Owens of Hot Springs; his daughter and son-in-law, Jo and Tony Cochran of Lonoke; three grandchildren and their spouses, Jimmy and Annette Owens of Little Rock, Melissa and Dean Thomey of Washington, DC and Zack and Jami Eaves of Lonoke; eight great-grandchildren; his sister and brother-in-law, Gwen and Frank Murchison of Albuquerque, New Mexico; as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and a host of wonderful friends. Services will be held at 10:00 AM, Monday, June 11, 2018, in the Davis-Smith Funeral Home Chapel, Hot Springs, with Bro. George Lynch officiating.

Visitation will be from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM, Sunday evening. Interment will be in Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Dave Braughton, Scott Joe, Larry Diggs, Rick Seay, Hank Fuhrman, and Ronald Owens.

Honorary pallbearers will be Ted Broughton, Billy Rowell, Gerald Sligh, and Barry Fiddler. Guest registry is at www. davis-smith.com.
