Victor Francis Smith, 93, of Sandusky passed peacefully away on Tuesday, July 3, 2018, at Stein Hospice Care Center. He was born April 1, 1925, in Tiffin to Charles and Florence (Ries) Smith. He attended St. Joseph Grade School (Tiffin) and graduated from Calvert High School in 1943.

He was a third alternate to West Point and served in the U.S. Army during World War II, landing at Omaha Beach as a D-Day reinforcement on June 12, 1944. He graduated cum laude from the University of Notre Dame in 1950. He worked as an engineer at National Machinery at Tiffin.

He later became vice-president of Sandusky Electric, Inc. until his retirement in 1997. He was a fourth-degree knight in the Knights of Columbus, active in the Catholic War Veterans, and spent over 35 years as a volunteer at the Ohio Veterans Home. He was an avid fan of Notre Dame football and the Cleveland Indians and was proud of having never cracked an egg.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Elizabeth “Betty” (Gerhart); children: Jane (Edward) Braun; Connie (Jeff) Mansell; Phil (Mary Pat); Teresa (Larry) Bogner; Richard; and Michael; 15 grandchildren: Angela and Fr. Stephen Braun; Matthew and Patrick Mansell; Meghan, Mark (Kristin), Timothy, Kevin, John, Jeffrey, and Andrew Smith; Brian (Kate) Bogner, Laura (Marcus Schlett); Katherine (Dylan Orwig), and Elizabeth (Aaron Sykes); four great-grandchildren: Claire Orwig; Grayson Smith; Thea Schlett; and Ava Bogner, as well as two due in August; his brother Donald; sister Yvonne Andrew; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and great-grandson Cohen Schlett.

The family will receive visitors from 9:00 a.m. until a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 7, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 429 Central Ave, Sandusky. Fr Tommy Rodrigues officiating. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery.
