Obituary for Virginia Estelle “Mammie” Perkins (Perkins) Mrs. Virginia Estelle “Mammie” Perkins, age 101, of Oakwood, Virginia, passed away Monday (November 5, 2018) at her home. Born July 24, 1917 the daughter of the late James Kelly and Alta Keen Perkins, she spent her early life in the Miller Creek section of Swords Creek, Virginia, moving and residing the majority of her life in Oakwood, Virginia. She was a member of Guiding Light Freewill Baptist Church for over sixty years.
She enjoyed traveling and taking bus tours throughout the United States. Every summer, up until a short time ago, she traveled to the lake by herself, returning to her Oakwood home often to care for her garden. She was a woman of great strength and up until recently, she did her own needlework and canning.
After her own children were grown, she enjoyed babysitting her grandchildren, nieces, and nephews and visiting with her best friend, Elva. She exemplified a virtuous woman as described in Proverbs 31. In addition to her parents, she was preceded to death by her husband, Edward Grey Perkins, two children, Eugene Perkins and Ernie Perkins, five brothers, Paul, Mason, Ashby, Robert and Link Perkins, and one sister, Rosezettia Conlon.
Survivors include five children, Jim Perkins and wife, Dorothy of Rosedale, Irene Dawson and husband, Glenn of Grundy, and Sue Whitt and husband, Michael, Sonny Perkins and wife, Debbie, and Faye Street and husband, Bobby all of Oakwood, Virginia; daughter-in-law, Sharon Perkins; four siblings, Fayrene Plaster, Swain Perkins, Vernie Perkins, and Herman Perkins; special niece and caregiver, Shelby Perkins; ten grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren also survive. The family would like to extend a special thank you to Shelby Perkins and Wanda Rowe for the wonderful care they provided. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 AM Thursday in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel, Honaker, Virginia with Rev.
Leo Hess officiating. Interment will follow in Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill, Virginia. Pallbearers will be Mike Perkins, Phillip Perkins, Daniel Perkins, Shawn Street, Eugene Perkins, Chris Vandyke.
Honorary pallbearers will be Bill Payne, Cecil Blankenship, Dr. Ramesh Kabaria and staff, Gloria Lewis, Ronnie and Debbie Tharpe, Bill Murphy, and the members of Guiding Light Church.
