Olsen, 98, of Parkersburg, passed away, March 24, 2019 at Worthington Manor. He was born July 7, 1920, in Shanghai, China, a son of the late Valdemar and Mary Olsen. Walter grew up in Berkley, California and upon graduating from high school joined the Merchant Marines.

After serving his country, he continued his education and became an Accountant and a Certified Nursing Assistant, he also worked at Walmart as a greeter after retiring. He was a Roman Catholic by faith; enjoyed fishing, reading, history, photography, and loved Volkswagens. He was a member of Masonic Lodge #449, the Saladin Shrine, Ben Bey Grotto, V.F.W. and American Legion.

He was a Kentucky Colonel; a recipient of the Green Thumb Prime Time Award; and in 2015 he received the Spirit Award for his service in the Merchant Marines. He is survived by one daughter, Julie I. Allender (Rick) of Parkersburg; and one niece, Marcia Herrman of Washington State. In addition to his parents, Walter was preceded in death by his wife, Vonda L. Shepherd Olsen; one grandson, Gregory Allender; and one sister, Mary Nicole Hamblin.

Funeral service will be 12:00 p.m. Thursday, March 28, 2019 at the Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home, 2333 Pike Street, with Pastor Charlie Stanley officiating. Burial with full military rites by American Legion Post #15 will follow at the Evergreen South Cemetery. The family will receive friends 10:00 a.m. to noon March 28, 2019 at the funeral home.
