Mr. Walter S. Smith, age 92, of Elizabethton, went home to join his wife in the presence of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, on Sunday, March 03, 2019, from Hermitage Health Care. Walter was born in Mount Savage, MD and was the son of the late Howard R. and Laura Fletcher Smith. In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by the love of his life, his wife of 37 years, Betty Lee Smith, two sisters, Pearl Biggs and Helen Smith, and a brother, Russell Smith.
Walter was a person who was loved by all that met him, he always had a kind word and could bring a smile to anyone’s face, he was cherished by so many, and will be greatly missed. Walter was a member of the Roan St. Church of God, he proudly served his country in the United States Navy, having served in World War Two. He enjoyed watching old westerns, Titians and Vols football games, traveling with his wife, and attending church.
He retired from AT&T after 20 years of service. Those left to cherish his memory include, two nieces, Dreama Thompson, of Bluff City, Judy Lashley, and her husband Gary, of MD; two nephews, Jason Thompson, and his wife Christina, of Jonesborough, Eddie Thompson, of Bluff City; one sister-in-law, Virginia Crouse, of Watauga; a special neighbor, Lisa Merritt, of Elizabethton. Several other nieces and nephews also survive.
A service to honor and celebrate the life of Walter will be held at 6:00 PM, Thursday, March 7, 2019, in the Tetrick Funeral Home Chapel, Elizabethton, with Pastor Ken Bewley, officiating. The family will receive friends in the chapel prior to the service Thursday from 4:00PM-6:00 PM. A graveside service will be held at 11:00 AM, Friday, March 8, 2019 at Washington County Memory Gardens, those wishing to attend the graveside service are asked to meet at Tetrick Funeral Home at 10:00 AM on Friday to go in procession to the cemetery.
Active pallbearers will be selected from friends and members of the Roan St. Church of God. Military honors will be accorded by the Carter County Honor Guard and the United States Navy. The family would like to extend a special thank you to Dr. Valerie Wilson for the love and special care shown to Walter, Trond Shepard, the doctors and staff of Hermitage Health Care, and the staff and residents of Sycamore Springs Assisted Living for all the love and care shown to Walter.
