Mr. William H. “Bill” Hayes, 78, of Greencastle, PA, passed away Saturday, February 2, 2019 in his home, after an extended illness. Born April 4, 1940 in Philadelphia, PA, he was the son of the late Henry Louis and Elsie Marie (Wagner) Hayes. He graduated from Father Judge High School, Philadelphia, and earned his Associates Degree from NOVA Community College.
In addition to Philadelphia, he has lived in Falls Church, VA, Hilton Head, SC, Okinawa, Japan, Anchorage, Alaska, Columbia, South America and Augusta, GA. He and his wife moved to Chambersburg, PA in 2006 and then made their home in Greencastle in 2009. After retiring from the US Army, he worked for the Sprint Corporation.
He married the love of his life, Sheila Eileen (Suder) Hayes on May 15, 1982 in Washington D.C. He was a member of the American Legion and St. Mark’s Catholic Church, Greencastle. Above all, Bill was a family man.
He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather and always made his family his priority. He also found time to enjoy his train collecting hobby, which has grown significantly over the years! He also loved to go boating; A hobby that he has enjoyed since he was a young boy.
He took his boat on the Potomac, the Chesapeake Bay, all of Hilton Head and pretty much any where he could! He was always the Captain and his wife, Sheila, always his First Mate! He enjoyed traveling and taking care of his plants brought him much pleasure!
He was a kind hearted man with a great sense of humor, who always put the needs of his family before his own. In addition to his wife, he will be greatly missed by his six children: Chris Blume, and her husband, Mike, Martinez, GA; Melissa Hayes, Tucker, GA; Lisa Reed, Fayetteville, PA; Jenine Gipe, Hagerstown, MD; Lisa Baldowski, and her husband, Harrell, Knoxville, TN and Janet Cox and her husband, Byron of McKinney, TX; nine grandchildren: Nicholas Blume, Augusta, GA; Patrick Blume and his wife, Adrienne, Savannah, GA; Matthew Blume and his wife, Allie, Augusta, GA; Angela Miller and her husband, Joseph, Clear Spring, MD, Brandon Keefer Buxton, Maine, Cody Baldowski, Knoxville, TN; Zachary Baldowski, Knoxville, TN; Katie Cox, McKinney, TX and Carly Cox, also of McKinney, TX; six great-grandchildren: Charles Blume, Andrew Miller, Hunter Miller, Tanner Miller, Matthew Miller and Jeremy Keefer; his grand-dog, Boomer, and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters: Carol Wright and Mary Johnson.
Funeral services will be held at 7:15 P.M. on Thursday, February 7, 2019 in Miller-Bowersox Funeral Home, 521 S. Washington St. Greencastle, with Rev. Kyle Sahd officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service in the funeral home on Thursday evening.
Burial will be private at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville, PA. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Wounded Warriors Project at www. woundedwarriorproject.org/donate.
