William Dearl “Bill” St. John, 80, of Laurel, passed away Thursday morning, September 13, 2018, surrounded by his loving family at his home. He was born October 11, 1937, in Sand Gap, Kentucky, one of eleven children of Robert and Estella Howard St. John. He attended Jackson County Schools and as a young man, was employed in the coal mining and logging industries.

In 1955, he enlisted in the United States Navy, and his tour of duty took him all around the world. He was honorably discharged in 1959. Following his discharge, he came to Laurel for residence.

On May 19, 1961, he was married to Barbara Caldwell Combs. Mrs. St. John survives. For over 50 years, he owned and operated St. John Home Improvement and Guttering.

He was an active member of the Family Worship Church in Blooming Grove, had served on the Laurel Town Board, and had been an EMT on the Laurel Fire Department. A sports enthusiast, he was a big fan of the University of Kentucky and the Cincinnati Reds. Survivors besides his wife include five children: John Combs of Laurel, Denise Back and her husband, Stephen, of Brookville, Brenda Acedo and her husband, Tony, of Orange County, California, and Willie St. John and his wife, Cathi, of Rushville; eleven grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Joyce McPherson of Laurel; a brother, Lloyd St. John of Tennessee; and a number of nieces, nephews, and in-laws.

He was preceded in death by a son, Christopher St. John and eight siblings. Funeral services will be conducted by Pastor Tom Marshall, Assistant Pastor Trevon Abernathy, and Owen Moody at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 18, 2018, in Miller, Moster, Robbins Funeral Home where friends may call from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m. on Monday. Burial with military honors provided by Bernard Hurst Post #77 of the American Legion will be in Laurel North Cemetery.
