A. Virginia “Dini” de los Santos, 93, of Macomb passed away at 8:20 p.m. Sunday, September 23, 2018 at the Elms Nursing Home in Macomb. She was born on January 6, 1925 in Sandusky, Ohio to Fred Paul and Marion Helen (Criss) Mainzer. She was raised by Fred and Loretta (Zeck) Mainzer in Sandusky and later in Lakewood, Ohio.

Surviving family includes four nieces, Connie Poehler (John) of Chicago, Cindy (Steve) Roon of Macomb, Pam Wood of Las Vegas, Nevada and Lisa Dax of Cleveland, Ohio; one nephew, Tod Mainzer of Henderson, Nevada. She was also blessed with three great-nephews and two great-nieces, as well as four great-great-nieces and one great-great-nephew. She was preceed in death by her parents as well as her two brothers and two sister-in-laws, Paul and Janet Mainzer and Don and MaryEllen Mainzer.

Dini married Dick Iehle in Salina, Ohio where they owned and operated an airport. She then married Keith Gilespie also in Salina, Ohio. From there she moved to Westwood, California.

She was hired as the Secretary of the Treasurer of 20th Century Fox. During her time there, she had dinner with Groucho Marx and his wife, met Paul Newman and the Three Stooges as well as many other up and coming stars of the 1950’s. She stayed there until she met and married Jorge de los Santos and as she put it, moved to Mexico, lock, stock and barrel on July 4, 1960.

She learned to speak the language, always carrying her Spanish/American dictionary. She loved the people and the beautiful country. They moved frequently for his job at the bank.

She left Mexico in 1976, settling in New Orleans French Quarter. She worked for a dentist’s office, as well as baking amazing cheesecakes that she sold to many of the local restaurants. Eventually she landed a secretarial job with Amoco Oil Company.

They ended up transferring the office to Houston where she stayed until her retirement. She then decided to move back to the familiarity of Cleveland until 1997 when she moved to Macomb to be near her younger brother, Don, and his family. She moved to the Elms Nursing Home June 6, 2009, where she enjoyed entertaining the staff with her songs and jokes.

Cremation rites have been accorded. Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, October 6, 2018 at Trinity Lutheran Church with Pastor Youngshim Pitcher officiating. There will be no visitation.

Private burial of ashes will be held at Lakewood Cemetery in Rocky River, Ohio. Memorials may be made to the Elms Nursing Home. Clugston-Tibbitts Funeral Home in Macomb is in charge of arrangements.
