Albert Neal Hess, longtime resident of Layton, Utah, passed away at the age of 91 on the afternoon of January 5, 2019. After a long struggle with dementia, Neal peacefully passed into the arms of our loving Father in Heaven, in a hurry to join his beloved Mae, who preceded him in death by only a few short weeks. This incredibly jovial man was well known for his witty sense of humor, always bringing joy into the heart of anyone who had the benefit of knowing him.

Even in dementia, Neal’s cheery disposition reigned supreme, peeking witty comments through the fog. This sweet-spirited man was known by all as calm, positive, and caring, bringing much love and happiness to those around him, even up until his last days. Neal had gifted skill with his hands, making wood creations of all kinds, as well as breathtakingly amazing stained-glass designs.

His creations have become family keepsakes, being passed to each generation with loving benefaction. Although dementia took many of his talents, hobbies, and skills away, it never robbed him of his sweet spirit and that beautiful smile or sparkle in his bright eyes. Neal was born to David Willard Hess and Elvira Nielsen Hess in Farmington, Utah, on October 8, 1927, living most of his young life in Farmington, Utah.

He was baptized and confirmed as a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints on February 2, 1936. In the aftermath of World War II, Neal enlisted in the United States Navy on January 19, 1946, serving only about two years when Uncle Sam decided to send the young men home. He then married his beloved Lyllismae “Mae” Homer on June 18, 1948 and settled in Layton, Utah, where they were bound by love and devotion for over 70 years of marriage.

Knowing their love was forever, they chose to be sealed for time and eternity in the LDS temple in January 1991. They were blessed with four children; Allen (Amy) Hess, Marlene (James) Cole, David (Marcy) Hess, and Larry (Jennie) Hess. Neal is survived by their four children, nineteen grandchildren, and 57 great-grandchildren.

The endearment of Neal’s good-humored rib-ticklers and caring nature will live on in the hearts of the beloved family members his legacy has inspired. His eternal blessings in the loving and forgiving arms of our Lord and Savior bring peace to all that know and love him. “Father, unto Thee I go, for Thou hath guarded me I know, and in your arms I gladly sleep, as my soul is yours to keep”.

Graveside services will be held Friday, January 11, 2019 at 11 a.m. at the Farmington City Cemetery. Friends may visit family Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Friday from 9 to 10 a.m. at Lindquist’s Layton Mortuary, 1867 No. Fairfield Road.
