Albert Rodriguez, Jr., 88, passed away peacefully on Apr. 16, 2018. A resident of Salinas, CA, for nearly 46 years, Al was born to Alberto and Adela Rodriguez in Tampa, FL on Oct.

30, 1929. A few years after graduating from Hillsborough High School, Al (AKA “Rod” during his military career) began his 21 years of service as a United States Army medic (1951-1972), proudly serving his country during the Korean Conflict (two tours) and Vietnam War (two tours), multiple assignments in Japan, Kansas, Kentucky, and Pennsylvania. He received many commendations including the Bronze Star Medal, National Defense Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, two Vietnam Service Medals, and two Combat Medical Badges.

Following his military service, Al dedicated 20 years to the Monterey County Sheriff’s department as a work furlough officer. In 1977, he earned an Associate of Arts degree from Hartnell College. During his assignment in Japan, Al married Hisako Ishida, whom he loved and cherished for 62 years until her death in Nov.

2017. He is survived by his children Berrina Shaw (Ray), Cathy Hurst Neilson, and Sheila Payne (Erik); his grandchildren, Ryan Hurst, Cody Neilson, Keanna Payne, and Seth Payne; and his great granddaughter Shiloh Neilson. His passions in life were dancing with his wife, traveling, dining, and sports of all types.

His final wishes were honored by Struve and Laporte Funeral Chapel. Al’s remains are entombed at Queen of Heaven Cemetery.
