On Thursday, January 17, 2019, Alexander M. Yvars, MD, age 86, of Mayfield, passed away at Nathan Littauer Hospital, Gloversville, NY. . He was born on April 12, 1932 in Brooklyn NY, a son of the late Manuel and Celia Mauriello Yvars.

He was of the Catholic faith and a member of the Holy Trinity Parish. Alexander received his BS degree from Fordham University in 1952. He served in the US Army in Korea (1952-54) rising to the position of Captain.

He earned his MD in 1959 from the University of Bologna Medical School, Italy. After completing his internship at NY Polytechnic Medical School Hospital and general surgery residency at Coney Island Hospital, Dr. Yvars began his general surgery practice with the Ellenville Medical Group, Ulster County in 1965. He was Chief of Staff at the Ellenville Community Hospital and served as Senior Physician at the Eastern NY Correctional Facility.

In 1971, he moved his family and surgical practice to Johnstown, NY with privileges at Nathan Littauer Hospital and the former Johnstown Hospital until its closing in 1987. He served as Physician Director and Medical Review Officer for the Littauer Occupational Alliance beginning in 1997 and in 1999 he became vice-president of Medical Affairs and Medical Director of NLH. In 2003, he was appointed to the NYS Board of Professional Conduct.

Until his retirement in 2007, Dr.Yvars was very involved in the medical community including Chief of Staff, Vice-chief of Staff and Secretary/Treasurer at NLH, the State Cancer Society and Cancer Registry, Fulton County Medical Society, Johnstown Hospital Foundation Board and Medical Director of Wells Nursing Home. His influence extended into the community outside of medicine as well including past president of the Eccentric Club, the Johnstown Board of Health from 1973-1983, the Lexington Center Foundation Board, Board member of the former Fulton County Bank and a past president of the Burroughs Nature Study Club. Dr. Yvars is survived by his beloved wife, Dolores Schiraldi Yvars, whom he married on April 8, 1961, three children, Alexander (Catherine Luey), Celia (Paul VanDenburgh) and Marguerite (Christopher Duplessis), six grandchildren, Collin and Christopher Yvars, Katherine, Elizabeth and Peter VanDenburgh and Gabrielle Duplessis.

He is also survived by his brother Dr. Manuel Yvars(Judith Irvin), brother-in-law Leonard Schiraldi (Michele Chisena) and sister-in law Rosemary Schiraldi Camas, several cousins, nieces and nephews. Dr. Yvars will be remembered for his wit, his wisdom, his compassion and his appetite for life. Contributions in his memory may be sent to the Nathan Littauer Hospital Foundation, Mountain Valley Hospice or the American Cancer Society, in care of the funeral home, if needed.
