He went home to be with the Lord on January 3, 2019 while resting at Transitional Healthcare Services in Kannapolis N.C. A week before his transition, Pop stated that he had taken a trip to heaven and God told him to go back because he wasn’t ready for him yet. He was so excited that he began to ask his family to preach about what he was experiencing while he was in what he called “the dying room”.

He fought a good fight and kept the faith and he was ready to receive his reward. Billy attended G.W. Carver High School. Subsequently he began working for Cannon Mills where he retired after over 40 years of service.

He was well known, he never met a stranger and would always introduce himself as Pop Fortson. He took great pride in representing Christ, with a spirit of excellence. To know him was to love him.

At an early age he joined Mt. Calvary Fire Baptized Holiness Church under the leadership of the late Bishop W.T. Bowens. He often reminisced about the good times he had there, how he helped with the construction of the church and he even carried rocks from the quarry for the upbuilding of God’s Kingdom.

However, when he got older, he joined First Baptist Church where he served faithfully as a member of the Men’s Choir and the Senior Usher Board until his health declined. He had a dream in 1995 where God came to him and saved him. He woke up renewed, crying, shouting and calling his family members; near and far, testifying about how God delivered him and commissioned him to be a Missionary.

Pop then purchased a van and launched his ministry helping as many people as he could. He was preceded in death by 4 sisters; Betty Fortson (twin sister), Shirley Johnston, Mable Godfrey and Emma Lowe. He leaves to cherish his memories two daughters Devonda (Untrell) Johnson Stone Mountain, GA, Lori Ann Fortson South Carolina; one son Billy Fortson Kannapolis, NC; two Granddaughters Alicia (Yaisa) Ramirez and Stephanie Caldwell Charlotte, NC; one grandson Steven Cureton, Kannapolis, NC; three Nephews Donald O. Fortson CSM (retired) Atlanta GA, Matthew Jacob Concord, NC, Rev.

Eddie Fortson (Babara) Cleveland, NC; 3 Nieces – Rev. Carla Carson, Paula Robinson(Oliver) and Anita Johnston all of Kannapolis, NC and a great number of other relatives and friends. Funeral arrangements are scheduled for Wednesday, January 9, 2019 at First Baptist Church of Kannapolis located at 1311 E. 1st Street in Kannapolis, NC.

The visitation will be held from 1:00 P.M.-2:00 P.M. followed by the funeral service at 2:00 P.M. Burial will follow at the church cemetery. Lamb Funeral Home Inc. will be serving the family.
