Obituary for Blandean Parcell Akers Blandean Parcell Akers, 90, died on Christmas morning, December 25, 2018. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 41 years, Eugene Washington Akers. Born on October 30, 1928, in Martinsville, Virginia, she was the oldest daughter of the late Roy Nolan Parcell and the late Grace Prillaman Parcell.

Many will remember Blandean who, along with her husband, Gene, owned and operated Akers’ Supermarket in Bassett, Virginia for more than thirty years. She was a hard-working business woman before many women worked outside the home. She was a long-standing member of the Pocahontas Bassett Baptist Church.

Most of all she was a devoted and beloved mother and grandmother. She is survived by her only child, Pamela Akers Armstrong, her son-in-law, Ward Lynn Armstrong, her granddaughters, Courtney Armstrong (Philip) Wenkstern, and Whitney Armstrong (Blake) Collins, her new great-granddaughter, Katherine Lynn Wenkstern and her brother, John Banks (Nancy) Parcell, all of whom reside in the Martinsville/Henry County area. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

Blandean was also preceded in death by her sister, Travis Parcell Cox, and her brothers, Nolan Rudolph Parcell, Joseph LaVerne Parcell, Thomas Winfred Parcell and Barry Scott Parcell. The family will receive friends at the Pocahontas Bassett Baptist Church in Bassett on Thursday, December 27, 2018 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Funeral services will also be held at the church on Friday, December 28, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. with the Reverend Susan Spangenberg officiating. A private interment will occur at Roselawn Burial Park.

The family also wishes to express appreciation to Mountain Valley Hospice and King’s Grant Retirement Community for Blandean’s care. Memorials may be made to the Pocahontas Bassett Baptist Church or the Martinsville-Henry County S.P.C.A. Arrangements are by Wright Funeral Service and Crematory.
