Obituary for Burkley F. McCarthy Jr. Burkley “Burk” F. McCarthy, Jr., 56, died at his home Wednesday, July 18, 2018. Burk was a respectful soul who always had a friendly smile and a genuine curiosity about the well-being of his friends and family. He was witty and humorous, but also quiet at times.
Burk had almost 30 years as a financial advisor after starting out in mortgage servicing in Denver. He lived, worked & enjoyed skiing in Colorado for a number of years before returning to his hometown where he raised his children. As a financial advisor, Burk set out to diligently learn about the needs and goals of his clients.
He was a listener and then a planner. Burk knew that understanding his clients was part of the pathway to their happiness. His goal was for his clients not to focus on the numbers, but instead on their family and ambitions.
Burk took special pride in developing just the right plan for his clients. Burk had been a financial advisor for Raymond James since 2014. Prior to that, he spent 22 years at Morgan Stanley Smith Barney, establishing the foundation of a fulfilling and satisfying career.
Burk was blessed to have many dear colleagues and mentors. Burk was a 1984 graduate of Wabash College with a degree in economics. Like his late father, Burkley, Sr., young Burk had a special love of his hometown and understood the importance of giving back.
Burk was an active board member and volunteer with United Caring Services and a past board member of the YMCA of Southwestern Indiana. He was the past board chair for both the Partner for Youth campaign and the Easter Seals Rehabilitation Center. POETS had a special place in his heart.
Burk was also a member of St. Mary Catholic Church. Burk enjoyed two special pastimes. Reading and playing golf.
He would be the first to admit that he was better at one than the other, which would probably explain why he spent so much time practicing golf. Burk could always be found with a book in hand, with a ready recommendation of a great read, and he enjoyed bringing library books by the house for his father. He also loved being part of the Flying Pugs BBQ team with friends who competed in various towns including Memphis.
Burk was preceded in death by his brother Michael Timothy McCarthy; mother Jane Ellen Dwyer McCarthy and his father, Burkley Francis McCarthy, Sr He is survived by two sons, Bradley Fendrich McCarthy and Collin Michael McCarthy; sisters Catherine Anne McCarthy; brother Kevin Paul McCarthy (Faith); sister Mary Frances McCarthy (Jim); sister Elizabeth Reitz McCarthy (Mikio); and nephews Liam Michael McCarthy and Keegan Reitz McCarthy.
