Clifton’s Obituary Clifton Gilkie, son of the late Marshall Gilkie, Sr. and Nettie Woods Gilkie, was born January 26, 1929 in Malvern, Arkansas. He was born last of four children and was affectionately called “Baby Boy”. Mr. Gilkie accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior at an early age and attended First Baptist Church in Malvern with his family.

He graduated from Langston High School in Hot Springs, AR and joined the United States Navy where he bravely served his country During World War II, earning The American Theater Ribbon Medal. After being honorably discharged from the military, Mr. Gilkie moved to Detroit, Michigan where he met Essie Mae Lamb and the two were united in marriage. To this union, seven children were born.

Mr. Gilkie worked for the United States Postal Service 39 years in Detroit and in Sacramento, CA where he retired in 1994. After retirement, he moved back to Arkansas and made Hot Springs his home. He joined St. Mary of the Spring Catholic Church in Hot Springs and served faithfully as an usher.

In the afternoon on October 13, 2018, Mr. Gilkie made the transition to his heavenly home. Mr. Gilkie was preceded in death by two sons and one grandson: Cornell Gilkie, Kenneth Gilkie, and Jamar Gilkie. He leaves to cherish his memory, three sons: Gerald Gilkie, Lansing, MI, Kendrick D. Gilkie, Detroit, MI.

Ronald A. Gilkie, Detroit, MI; three daughters: Marla L. Gilkie, Detroit, MI, Rolanda Gilkie-Carrethers, Jacksonville, FL, Tamara E. Williams (Darrin), Detroit, MI; and one sister: Dorothy Gilkie Fambro, Little Rock, AR; seven grandchildren: Emmette D. Gilkie, Ramael M. Keeler, Juan L. Carrethers, Jr., Tyrone D. Johnson, Marcus D. Gilkie, Miya L. Gilkie, Amaris M. Williams; three great-grandchildren: Emmette D. McSwain, Emmette D. Gilkie, Jr. and Khylee L. Carrethers; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and a special friend, Ms. Lena Byrd. A celebration of his life will be held at Brandon’s Mortuary, in Malvern, Arkansas, at 1:00 p.m., on Saturday, October 27, 2018. A visitation will be held Saturday morning before the service at the funeral home from 11:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. His earthly body will be laid to rest at Masonic Cemetery on Babcock Street, in Malvern.
