Gardiner- David (Dinny) James Gilson, 85, of Gardiner died after a brief illness at the Maine Veterans Home in Augusta on Wednesday April 18, 2018. He was born in Gardiner on June 3, 1932 the son of Ralph and Ella (Crocker) Gilson. He graduated from Gardiner High School.

He entered the US Army in 1953 serving two years discharging in 1955 earning the National Defense Service metal and Good Conduct metal. He met and married his wife Susie Caswell in 1958. They had four children.

David was very active in any type of school sports. He was a big fan of most sports. When he was younger you could always find him at the Gardiner Football games.

David worked at the Commonwealth Shoe for many years. Following the closing of the shoe factory David worked as a bartender at the American Legion Post # 4 Gardiner. He was very active in the Post; past Post Commander several times.

He volunteered to help operate BINGO as well as Toys for Tots. He was a friend to many. He was predeceased by his parents, his wife Susie Caswell Gilson, his sister Dot Young, his brother Ralph (Spike) Gilson, his granddaughter Jacqueline Gilson Morgan, his best friend Rusty Fowler and niece Margaret (Peggy) Dumond.

He is survived by his son Michael (Spike) Gilson and wife Nancy of Farmingdale, his daughters Roxanne Caswell and companion John Buckley of Pittston, Gail Williams and husband Dexter of Gardiner, Audrey St Pierre and husband William of Chelsea, four grandchildren, Jason Brown, William St Pierre, Melissa Gilson, Jessica St Pierre, three great grandchildren Keegan Brown, Kristopher Campbell and Aleigha Strout, his sister Mary Sergent of Coopers Mills, Alex Hinckley a great nephew and many nieces, nephews and cousins. At his request services will be private. A celebration of life will be held Monday, April 23rd from 3 to 5pm at the American Legion Smith-Wiley Post # 4 Griffin St Gardiner.
