Pittston – William A. Spears, 75, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, May 28, 2018, at his residence in Pittston, Maine. Bill was born in Augusta, Maine, on November 14, 1942, the son of Merville (Curly) and Shirley DeCoster Spears. He joined the Navy while attending high school and graduated from Gardiner Area High in 1961.

He met Dawn (Albert) while attending school and they married in 1962. Bill retired from the Catholic Cemetary Association in 2005 after working there for 35 years. He was a long-time member of the Fin, Fur & Feather Club in Chaplin, Connecticut, having earned awards and recognition for skeet and shotgun, as well as coaching several skeet teams.

He was an active member of the National Rifle Association, and was an avid sportsman, enjoying fishing, hunting, skeet and watching baseball and football games. He recently relocated from Baltic, Connecticut, to Pittston, to reunite with the mother of his children, Dawn Albert Skehan. He is also survived by his son Shawn Spears (Leanne) of Bolton, Connecticut; and daughters Stacey Hansen (William) of Manchester, Connecticut, and Leanne DiUlio ( Stephen) of Ellington, Connecticut.

Bill is survived by sister, Judi Martin (Ray) of Jefferson; and aunts Frances McGraw and Theresa Spears of Augusta. He is also loved by his seven grandchildren and eight great grandchildren: Ashley (Ryan) Donecker and son, Reece; Alex Spears; Sarah (David) Sander and children Ryan, Ayden, Dylan , and Alivia; Adam Robbins and daughter, Sophia; Shelby Dorman; Carl (Danielle) Taylor and daughter, Skylar; and Allison Solis and son, Jayden. Bill is also remembered fondly by several nieces and nephews and special friend, Debbie Stiehl.

In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by his brother-in-law, Patrick Toman. Family and friends are invited to visit at 9:30 a.m. at Staples Funeral Home and celebrate mass at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church at 11 a.m., on Monday, June 4, 2018, in Gardiner, Maine. Burial with commital prayers will follow the mass at Highland Cemetery in Jefferson, Maine.

A gathering of family and friends will take place after the burial at the Albert home, 9 Albert Circle, in Pittson. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Bill’s name to a charity of your choice.
