Obituary for Dennis Michael Mooney Dennis Michael “Mike” Mooney, of Hurricane, entered into rest at home on Wednesday, November 7, 2018. Born December 1, 1936, in Nellis, WV, he is the son of the late Dennis Addison Mooney and Mildred Frances (Pelphrey) Mooney. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Frances (Mooney) Sleeth.
Dennis is survived by his ex-wife, Ilene; his son Dennis Todd Mooney (Becca) of Olympia, WA; his daughter Michelle Townsend (Todd) of Hurricane, WV and two granddaughters he adored, Megan Townsend and Aviva Mooney. He is also survived by his two brothers, Doug Mooney (Carole Sue) of Morgantown, WV and John Mooney (Deanna) of Proctorville, OH, along with a host of nieces, nephews and extended family that he loved. Mike graduated from Morris Harvey College, currently known as The University of Charleston.
The Boy Scouts of America were important to Mike and he was a proud Eagle Scout. One of Mike’s proudest times in his life was the service he gave to his country. He served his country in the United States Army and ended his service in 1962 as a Sergeant.
Mike was a proud American. Mike retired in 2000 from Crawford & Company after a 35 year career. He managed offices in Huntington, WV, Charleston, WV, Danville, VA, Alexandria, VA and he ended his career as Manager of the Wilmington, NC office.
Mike enjoyed life to the fullest and was blessed with a fulfilling retirement life in Carolina Beach, NC. Mike’s light-hearted nature and happy-go-lucky attitude was infectious. You knew it was going to be a good time when you were together with Mike!
He treasured time with dear friends he made at the Elks Lodge in Wilmington and the many hours spent with them at “the round table”. During retirement, he enjoyed golfing, listening to blues beach music and was dedicated to serving others while delivering Meals on Wheels, performing other volunteer work at food banks and other endeavors raising money for good causes. The hours he spent on his deck overlooking the beach and ocean were some of the best moments of his life — soaking in glorious sunsets, watching Marines from Camp Lejeune perform drills, and simply savoring the beauty of his surroundings.
He looked most forward to spending time at the Hardy County hunting camp with his son, brothers, nephews and close friends: Buzzy, Max, Glenn, Jerry and countless other men that kept a special place in his heart. The Mooney family’s Summers County Camp will be Mike’s final resting place. He felt most at peace when he crossed through the field’s gate at camp knowing he’d soon be surrounded by the family he adored.
A private family service will be held in 2019 to honor his wishes of being interred at the family camp. A memorial celebration of Mike’s life, led by Pastor John Minihan, will be held at 2:00pm, Saturday November 10, 2018, in Hurricane, WV at Chapman Funeral Home, Hurricane, WV. Friends are invited to gather one hour prior to the service.
