She suffered a ruptured brain aneurysm on October 1, 2018. She had made incredible strides toward rehabilitation only to suffer a second brain injury due to a fall.
Doris was born on December 3, 1934, in Kenosha, the daughter of the late Walter & Esther (Phelps) Maxwell. She was educated in the schools of Kenosha, graduating from Bradford H.S. She attended nursing school at Columbia Hospital in Milwaukee.
She was introduced to Patrick Duchac on a blind date. They were married on February 18, 1956, in Kenosha. She found her calling as a registered nurse; she “adored” being a nurse.
For 31 years she cared for patients at Kenosha Hospital. She worked with many physicians and was a mentor to generations of nurses. One of her pearls of wisdom, “If there is time to lean, there is time to clean”.
When she retired in 1998, her staff commemorated her career with a personalized quilt. Her love of music and caring for others was a thread throughout her life. Doris was a lifelong member of Wesley United Methodist Church.
For over 60 years, she played the organ and piano, sang in the church choir, and was an active member of the UM Women’s circle group. She volunteered at the Shalom Center. She accompanied her children and grandchildren on piano for their music recitals and competitions.
She loved to travel with her family; starting in a tent, graduating to a homemade camper, then an RV. She traveled coast to coast, including Canada. She enjoyed spending time and snowmobiling at the Duchac Family Farm in Antigo, WI.
Most recently, she went cruising with her daughter and grandchildren. She was the greatest cheerleader for her children and grandchildren; supporting them throughout their lives. She was always the person you could call on.
She was an animal lover and pet sitter. She enjoyed spending time with her family & friends. She loved to cook and to sew.
She always had food to share and send home with any visitor to her home. She altered clothes and created hanging towels for everyone’s kitchen. She loved to find a bargain at a rummage sale.
She enjoyed going to local musical events with her sister and daughter. Doris will be missed. Survivors include her children, Sue Peterson of Kenosha, Kathy (Steven) Franks of AZ, Bruce (Lynn) Duchac, Kevin (Debi Cook) Duchac both of Kenosha; brother, Russell (Arlene) Maxwell of Kenosha; sister, Helen (Richard) Poppie of Union Grove; grandchildren, Andrew (Sara Sherwood) Peterson, Sara Beth (Adam) Sawyer, Spencer Franks, and Kayla Duchac.
