Dorothy Agape Ganakes, 97, of Burlington, died at 7:23 AM Saturday, November 10, 2018, at the Great River Klein Center in West Burlington. Dorothy was born December 22, 1920, in Springfield, MA, she was the daughter of George and Annastacia Mavro-Thalassites. On August 1, 1942, she married George Ganakes in Cedar Rapids.

George passed on February 1, 1982. Dorothy was a member of Christ Episcopal Church. She was very athletic and liked to play tennis.

One of her gifts that she enjoyed sharing with the community was cooking spaghetti. Dorothy would take her children to Crapo Park for picnics and other fun activities that are now treasured memories for them. She made her home a haven for her family.

Dorothy’s favorite music was played on the Bouzouki, a traditional Greek instrument. She was very relational, friendly and beautiful. Dorothy loved her family, friends and community.

Survivors include her children, Stella Linkin of Burlington, Dino (Ruth) Ganakes of Biggsville, Nick Ganakes of Chicago, Paul Ganakes of Burlington, Sam Ganakes of Gulfport, Stacey Tucker of Johnston, IA, Olga (George) Burk of Phoenix, AZ, and Katina Kobolt of Scottsdale, AZ; thirteen grandchildren; many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and one sister, Rosie, of Kissimmee, FL. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, one son, Peter Anthony Ganakes, one brother, Leo, and two sisters, Sophie and Mary. Family will receive friends from 10:00 AM until 11:00 AM Wednesday, November 14, 2018 at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home.

The funeral service for Dorothy will be 11:00 AM Wednesday, November 14, 2018, at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home with Father Carl Mann officiating. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. A time of food and fellowship will be held in the community room at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home following the burial.

A memorial has been established for the Great River Klein Center Starr and Blackhawk Neighborhood in memory of Dorothy.
