Laura Lain Lehman, 88, of Burlington, died at 7:03 A.M., Friday, November 2, 2018 at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington. Born November 1, 1930, in Burlington, she was the daughter of Joseph E. and Grace F. Cargill Lehman. Laura Lain was employed at J.S. Schramm Co

She then worked at Benner Tea Company in the Data Processing Department. Moving to Chicago, she was employed by World Book Encyclopedia as Department Head in the Data Processing-Control Department. Later she was Secretary to the Vice President-Computer Division and supervised the Steno Pool.

Returning to Burlington she was the Bookkeeper at Smith Engineering Association Inc. for 15 years before retiring. She graduated in 1949 from Burlington High School. She was a dog lover and was a member of the People Pet Partnership Inc., the original Southeast Iowa Animal Protection Association and Des Moines County Humane Society.

She was a founding member of S.T.O.P.P., the organization that spays and neuters cats and dogs. She enjoyed music from Barbershop Harmony, 40’s – 60’s Jazz to the light classics. She loved dancing to the big bands of that era.

She enjoyed reading mystery novels, and watching the Late Late Show. Most of all, she loved to cook and feed family and friends. Survivors include one brother, Kenneth J. (Phylis) Lehman of Burlington; five nieces, Kim K. (Ron) Smith, Vickie J. (Larry) Kientz, Renee A. (Mike) Zaiser, Kela A. Lehman, and Jana J. (Scott) Gibbs of Danville, IA; and special friends, Pat Friedman-Shaw, William H. Lees, Steven C. Lees, and James T. Lees, and their families; and several beloved great nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Jean G. Tiemeyer of Burlington. As per Laura’s request cremation has been accorded and there will be no visitation. A family Celebration of Life will happen at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established for the Des Moines County Humane Society, and Great River Hospice.
