Obituary for Douglas E. “Doug” Bishop Big Stone Gap, Va. Douglas E. “Doug” Bishop, 73, passed away on Friday (June 15, 2018) at his home. He was a life-long resident of Big Stone Gap and was raised in the Wildcat community.
Doug attended the Jasper School and served in the U. S. Army in Germany. He was owner/operator of Bishop Trucking, Inc. for 30 years, and was affectionately known as “Poor Boy” on the C.B. radio. Doug loved to fish, watch Westerns on t. v. and attend car shows.
He was a member of Deep Springs Baptist Church in the Deep Springs community of Dryden, VA. He was preceded in death by his mother, Mabel Rhoten Bishop; and three sisters, Darlene Bishop, Betsy Dixon and Teresa “Cookie” DeBoard. Doug is survived by his wife of 48 years, Freda Boggs Bishop; his son, Andrew Bishop and wife, Jenny of Kingsport, TN; his grandson, Adam Bishop; brother, Roger Bishop and wife, Judy of Rye Cove, VA and Johnny Bishop and wife, Joanne of Big Stone Gap; and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Monday at Holding Funeral Home (17 E. 3rd St., N.) in Big Stone Gap, VA. The funeral service will be conducted at 7:00 p.m. Monday in the funeral home chapel with Pastor Rick Phillips and Pastor Tony Palubicki officiating. Military graveside rites will be accorded 11 a.m. Tuesday at the John Rhoten Cemetery (Wildcate Community).
The family and friends are asked to meet at the funeral home by 10:30 a.m. Tuesday to go in procession to the cemetery. Friends will serve as pallbearers. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to the Deep Springs Baptist Church, 149 Deep Springs Church Drive, Dryden, VA 24243.
