Obituary for James Hawley “Jimabe” Fleenor Big Stone Gap, VA James Hawley “Jimabe” Fleenor, 45, passed away on Wednesday (June 6, 2018) at his home. Jimabe, as he was affectionately known, was a life-long resident of Big Stone Gap. He was a 1990 graduate of Powell Valley High School and a 1994 graduate of Clinch Valley College.

He was a Science Teacher at Appalachia High School, Powell Valley High School and Union High School for the past eleven years. With great pride, Jimabe wrote a workbook on geology that was published and used across the Commonwealth of Virginia in classroom instruction. He served on the state committee for S. O. L. Earth Science Curriculum & Development.

Jimabe was known as the “Weatherman of Union High”. Jimabe was an avid Powell Valley High School Viking and Union High School Bear fan and supporter. Jimabe loved hunting and fishing, thoroughly enjoying his annual Canadian trips with his family.

He was an honorary member of the Dogwood Garden Club in Big Stone Gap. He is survived by his wife of ten years, Alison Cantrell Fleenor; his daughter, Laurel Delaney Fleenor, of the home; his parents, Dr. Lawrence J. Fleenor, Jr. and Betty Johnson Fleenor of Big Stone Gap; brother, Steven Fleenor and wife, Andrea, of Freeport, ME; nephews, Bryce and Wyatt Fleenor; and an aunt, Lois Smith of Coeburn, VA. The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Friday at Trinity United Methodist Church (203 E. 1st St., S.) in Big Stone Gap.

The funeral service will follow at 8:00 p.m. in the church sanctuary with the Rev. Ronnie Mutter and Greg Townsend, Minister, officiating. Committal services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Saturday at Powell Valley Memorial Gardens.

Family and friends will meet at Trinity U.M.C. by 10:20 a.m. to go in procession to the cemetery. Pallbearers will be: Bill Cawood, Steven Fleenor, Andy White, Eric Hicks, Gary Hall, Dan Roop, Mike Goforth and Dennis Ashley. To view the obituary online and offer condolences, please visit www.
