Edward M. Thoben, Jr., 94, of Louisville passed away peacefully at home on January 7, 2019. Edward was born on August 4, 1924 at Norton Hospital to Edward M Thoben Sr, and Edna Haager Thoben. Ed married Mary Elizabeth “Betty” Nunnelley on March 31, 1951.
Betty passed away on April 24, 2013 after 62 years of a wonderfully happy marriage. Ed grew up in Louisville where he attended I.N. Bloom Grade School and Male High School graduating in 1942. Until he was called up as an Air Force Volunteer Cadet Trainee in Meteorology in April 1943, Ed attended Rose Polytechnic Institute.
Serving in 1st Air Force at various bases in aircraft maintenance and navigation until he was discharged in January 1946, he later joined the 100th Infantry Division Reserve at Bowmen Field and eventually retired at the rank of Major. When the war ended, Ed continued his education at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute graduating in June 1949. His professional career began at American Standard where he held various positions in Engineering and Management until his retirement as a Division General Manager in 1986.
Ed acquired and operated ACME Wholesale Furnace Supply and ACME Walton Tool & Die before his final retirement in 1997. Ed was a loving husband and father. He kept active by enjoying tennis and golf throughout his life.
Ed took pride in teaching his Grandchildren to swim. He will be remembered for his love of dancing and indulging in a martini at the end of the day. Along with his wife and parents, Ed is preceded in death by his sister Margaret Thoben Marquard.
Ed & Betty leave behind four devoted children, Lauralee Thoben O’Grady (Mike) San Diego, California, E Michael Thoben III (Jules), Groveland, California, Matthew Allen Thoben (Debbie) Louisville, KY, and Holly Ann Monnette, San Diego, California. Ed had three grandchildren, Eric Thoben (Megan), Jonathan Monnette and Jennifer Monnette. He also had a great grandson, Jack Thoben.
Visitation will be 3:00pm – 7:00pm on January 22, 2019 at Rattermans Funeral Home, 3711 Lexington Road, “in St. Matthews”. A funeral mass will be at 10:00 am, January 23, 2019 at St. Leonards Catholic Church, 440 Zorn Ave, followed by burial at Cave Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Edward M Thoben’s memory to: Veterans of Wars Post 1170, 107 Evergreen Road, Louisville, 40243, to a charity of your choice, or St. Leonards Catholic Church.
