Obituary for Mr. Edward W. Lotz Edward W. (Ned) Lotz, a Tinton Falls, New Jersey resident, died on April 8, 2018. The son of Edward W. Lotz and Helen Hegarty Lotz, he was born on Staten Island, New York on June 25, 1922, where he resided with his family until 1986. Ned served in the Second World War with the United States Army Air Force as a flight instructor for the P-47 Thunderbolt fighter planes from 1942 to 1946.
During that time, he was stationed with his wife, Stephanie, at Montgomery, Alabama and Fort Sumter, South Carolina. After the War, he graduated from Curtis High School on Staten Island. He considered the time he spent in the service to be the most formative of his life and spoke often of these experiences with his children and grandchildren.
He was truly proud to be one of “The Greatest Generation”. After the War, Ned borrowed $800 from a relative to start his own fuel oil service and delivery company. Through internal growth and acquisitions, Lotz Fuel Oil evolved into Sipco Oil Company (Staten Island Petroleum Company) in 1961.
The company was sold to Petro Oil Company in 1986. Afterwards, he retired to a well-deserved life of golf, laughter, and time with friends & family in Palm Desert, California and Wall Township, New Jersey. Ned was a member of Spring Lake (NJ) Country Club, as well as Palm Desert and Avondale Country Clubs in Palm Desert where, in 1993, his only hole-in-one was witnessed by his then 10-year-old grandson.
Ned was predeceased by his beloved wife, Stephanie, in 2012 after 68 wonderful years of marriage. Ned is survived by three daughters: Janet O’Connor and her husband Tom and their son Christopher (Vanessa); Stephanie Seaborg and her husband Jim and their children Christina Host-Steen (Erik) and Jimmy (Heidi); Pam Spellane and her husband Tom, and their children Patrick (Katherine) and Megan. He also leaves two sisters: Phyllis Campbell of Madison, New Jersey and Barbara McNally of Barnegat, New Jersey and numerous nieces and nephews.
A third sister, Betty Romer, predeceased him as did a grandson, Jonathan O’Connor. His 95th birthday celebration included his treasured five great-grandchildren; Connor and Gavin Seaborg, Dru and Philip Spellane, and Kiley O’Connor. Ned always had a tale or two to tell (usually over a holiday dinner or other family celebrations).
