Obituary for Dorothy Jean Tiedemann Smith Fry Dorothy Jean “Dot” Tiedemann Smith Fry, 86, died at her home in Shark River Hills on Saturday, May 12, 2018, after a long and courageous battle with Alzheimer’s disease. She was born in Long Branch, NJ on January 7, 1932 to George and Melvina Tiedemann; and was raised in Neptune. She graduated from Neptune High School in 1949 and Trenton State College in 1954.
After graduating from college, Dot taught 2nd grade at Bradley Park Elementary school until 1957. After raising her three sons, she returned to teaching and substituting in local schools. Known as “Mrs. Smith” to her students, she taught kindergarten and basic skills at Woodrow Wilson School, Neptune City, NJ in the early 1970s until she retired in 1989.
After retiring, Dot remarried and lived in West Nyack, NY and spent summers in Neptune. She and her husband, Jim Fry, were very active in the summer ministries in Ocean Grove. Together, they attended bible studies, concerts, sang in the choir festivals and were active in the auditorium ushers group and auxiliary.
They also traveled the world and enjoyed time with their children and grandchildren. Dot loved playing the piano and all types of classical and sacred music. She was active in Hamilton United Methodist Church, Neptune, NJ and Clarkstown Reformed Church in West Nyack for many years; and a member of the American Legion Post 346 Ladies Auxiliary, Neptune, NJ.
She was predeceased by her first husband, James E. Smith, Jr., her parents and her six brothers, George, Melvin, Robert, Edward, John and Herbert Tiedemann. She is survived by her husband, James T. Fry, her sons Brian (Karen) Smith of Neptune, NJ, Garry (Jill) Smith of Atlantic Highlands, NJ, Jeffrey Smith of Crested Butte, CO; her stepchildren, Jeffrey (Lynn Rakos) Fry of Brooklyn, NY, Nancy (Dean) Cundall of Whitsett, NC, Pamela (Joseph) Holahan of Chester, NY and Barbara (Anthony III) Scarcelle of Cochranville, PA; eleven grandchildren, Adam Smith, Hannah Hubbard, Lydia Smith, James and Katherine Fry, Ellin Cundall, Brian and Caitlin Holahan, Anthony IV, Allesandra and Jeffrey Scarcelle, two great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Family and friends are invited to visitation at Ely Funeral Home, 3316 State Hwy 33, Neptune, NJ, on Wednesday, May 23, 2018 from 4:00 – 8:00 PM.
Funeral service will be held on Thursday, May 24, 2018 at 11:00 AM at Hamilton United Methodist Church, 858 Old Corlies Ave, Neptune, NJ, 07753. Gathering at the church will begin at 10:00 AM. Interment will be in Monmouth Memorial Park, Tinton Falls, NJ following the service.
