He served with HQ/4/11, making the Inschon-Seoul Landing and progressed northward in November-December 1950. He endured the freezing temperatures of -42° during the Battle of the Chosin. He received the Purple Heart.
This famous battle became a seminal event in Ed’s life. Many years later in Texas, Ed completed the Certificate of Training from the Texas Veterans Commission, so he could assist other veterans. In a volunteer capacity, he helped over 140 deserving veterans receive 100% V.A. Compensation Awards due to their service in that frozen tundra of North Korea in November-December 1950.
In business, Ed was self-employed as an independent manufacturer representative representing companies such as Apple, Sony, Maxcell, Marantz. His company, Miller & Associates, became the largest electronic/computer rep firm in the Southwest by 1986. In the 1990’s, Ed owned two independent telecommunications companies, providing “Call-Home” programs to many United States military academies. In 1999, Ed became President of the North Texas Chapter of the Chosin Few (veterans of the Korean Campaign).
As President, he recruited Korean Veterans throughout the 4-state area, doubling the size of the Chapter within two years. In 2001, he requested and received 100% participation from members to contribute to the Battle of the Chosin Monument on the Memorial Walkway the DFW National Cemetery. Ed often conducted graveside services for members of the Chosin Few.
He was a respected and effective leader; he and his wife Sue found deep gratification in helping fellow veterans and their families. The couple became charter members of Stonebriar Community Church, Frisco, TX, in 1998, serving in various capacities. Ed served 18 years with the Boy Scouts of America, was active in the Dallas and Frisco Chamber of Commerce helping young entrepreneurs; and in retirement, worked diligently helping deserving veterans.
He had a beautiful baritone voice which led, in his twenties, to an offer from the Billy Graham organization to join their crusades along with Cliff Barrow and George Beverly Shea. He declined, but he will be remembered for his concern for others. Graveside services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, August 1, 2018 at Restland Cemetery in Dallas.
