Obituary for Elizabeth S. Dennis Elizabeth S. Dennis, 82, passed away peacefully on the early hours of her birthday, October 12, 2018. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, Christian, microbiologist, animal lover, cross stitcher, baker and friend to many.

Elizabeth was born in Marion, Alabama to Albert and Mary Elizabeth Stewart. She met her husband, Donald Dennis, while in college at University of Montevallo. After earning her undergraduate degree, she proceeded to earn her Master’s degree and PhD (all but dissertation) in Microbiology from Emory University.

A woman before her time, she was a research scientist for Emory publishing over 15 research articles in National journals. After leaving Emory to care for her adopted daughter, Donna, she began her 35-year career for the State of Georgia. She was a microbiologist in a clinical laboratory for a State residential facility for those with severe physical and mental disabilities.

She advanced to laboratory manager. The final years of her career were spent as the manager of the State of Georgia’s Mycology and Tuberculosis Laboratory. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Marietta since 1961.

She was an active member of Adult I Sunday School Class, volunteered with Vacation Bible School, was a Pew Preparer and a supporter of the Chancel Choir. She will be fondly remembered for the baked goods she brought to church events, especially her coconut cake. Elizabeth continued to live an active life despite the physical toil of her Parkinson’s disease.

She treasured her friends at Heritage of Brookstone and enjoyed their daily board games and engaging conversations. She worked hard to keep her mind sharp with her Ipad completing complex crossword and Sudoku puzzles daily. Elizabeth is survived by her daughter Donna Dye (Pat) and her grandson Roland “Trey” Castellanos III.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Albert and Mary Elizabeth Stewart; her husband, Donald Dennis; and her son, Donald Dennis, Jr. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, October 17, 2018 at 2:00pm at First Presbyterian Church of Marietta. The family will receive friends immediately following the service. Interment will be on Thursday, October 18, 2018 at the Georgia National Cemetery in Canton, GA.
