Obituary for Emery G. Matthias Matthias, Emery G. Saginaw Twp. , Michigan Passed away peacefully at Covenant Health Care surrounded by his family on Sunday, April 8, 2018. He was 90 years old.

Emery George Matthias was born on April 1, 1928 in Saginaw, MI to the late George and Ruth (Flood) Matthias. Emery had been a lifelong resident of Saginaw, becoming a member of Ames United Methodist Church in 1940, and graduating from Arthur Hill High School in 1946. Following his graduation he enlisted with the US Army during the Korean War serving in Germany.

Emery met Jeanetta Wood in January of 1953 following his honorable discharge, and they were married on March 12, 1953 in Saginaw at Ames United Methodist Church. Emery then graduated from General Motors Institute as a mechanical engineer, and received his Master’s Degree in Education from Central Michigan University. Emery worked for Saginaw Steering Gear where he was innovative in designing Power Steering for cars and also worked for affiliates within the automotive industry throughout his career.

In addition, he worked at Dow Chemical and Dow Corning where he was involved in developing the first breast implants. In the early 70’s he taught drafting, wood and metal shop at Eisenhower High School. At Ames U.M.C. he enjoyed serving the Lord with his talents and volunteered many hours, going to visit the sick and offering friendship and hope for over 78 years.

Emery was heavily involved with the Boy Scouts, Troop 304, including being a member and leader. He found great joy in building his log cabin, and items for his family and others. He was a craftsman and loved to work with wood.

Emery is survived by his three children: Brian (Cindy) Matthias, Peggy (Dave) Smith and Janet (Brad) Davidson; nine grandchildren: Trent Matthias, Megan and Nicholas Matthias, Brooke (Blake) Mason, Renee (Tom) Casperson, Melissa (Ryan) Spaulding, Gordon (Chelsea) Davidson, Gretchen (Jon) Platt, Connor Davidson and his partner, Heather Bicknell; two great grandsons: Edward Mason and Gabe Casperson; sister, Grace Christilaw; many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. Emery was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Jeanetta who passed away on December 10, 2008; and his son, Gerald Matthias who passed away July 16, 2003. According to Emery’s wishes, cremation has taken place and no memorial service will be held.
