Evelyn’s Obituary Mary “Evelyn” Milos, age 92, passed away January 16, 2019 at Piper Shores on the ocean in Scarborough, Maine. Born in Obetz, Ohio, to E.J. and Mary Sherman Smith, Evelyn loved her studies from an early age. Valedictorian of her Hamilton Township High School class, Evelyn went on to graduate as the “Prize Nurse” in White Cross Hospital’s School of Nursing (Columbus, Ohio) in 1947.
In medical settings as in much of the rest of her life, Evelyn did things “by the book”. Hospital physicians and a variety of office-based doctors asked by name for Evelyn’s full-time and per diem services. She worked in surgical, OB-GYN, EENT and psychiatric practices, creating order while also turning a kind ear to patients.
She played an active role in the creation of Bloom Township’s (Fairfield County, Ohio) volunteer emergency squad circa 1970, and gave allergy shots to numerous neighbors at no charge. More than once she patched up a kid or a dog or a goat. Evelyn married the late Charles (“Chuck”) Milos in 1948, and with him raised a family in central Ohio.
When Chuck retired, they opened a successful travel agency in Lancaster, Ohio, with Evelyn serving as president and chief operating officer. They did a good deal of pleasure travel to such places as the Panama Canal, Australia, New Zealand and the South Pacific Islands, the Trans-Siberian Railway, Alaska and the Canadian Rockies. They departed Ohio in 1985, living at Lake Tahoe in Nevada for 15 years, then the San Francisco Bay Area, wintering in Phoenix.
They came east to Maine in 2001, joining the Piper Shores community in 2004. Evelyn truly loved baseball, changing allegiance from the Cincinnati Reds to the San Francisco Giants to the Boston Red Sox, depending on where she lived. She also loved her family, church choirs and was active in the Republican Party, until her later years when she no longer voted a straight ticket.
Evelyn leaves a brother, George W. Smith of Columbus, Ohio; a son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Sue Milos of Menlo Park, California, and daughter Laurel Milos of Portland, Maine. She is also survived by her grandchildren Joshua (Michelle) Milos of Hayward, CA, Jared (Lacy) Milos of Mountain View, CA and Brooke Milos of Menlo Park; great grandchildren Eva Lyn (her namesake), twins Jacob and Matthew, and a beloved cousin, Naomi Kreachbaum of West Fulton, Ohio. The family wishes to thank the entire staff of Piper Shores for their years of friendship and caring, and Angel Hamilton, a special friend of the family.
There will be no formal memorial service. Those who wish to honor Evelyn’s memory might consider donating to the Alzheimer’s Association of Maine (www. alz.org/maine ), or simply lending your talents where needed in your community.
