Obituary for Flora Shorr (Dobbins) Flora Dobbins Shorr, 94, of Meriden, Connecticut, died peacefully on Sunday, January 20, 2019. Mrs. Shorr was born on December 15, 1924, in Brooklyn, New York. She was the daughter of Charles and Anna Dobbins.
For over 20 years she was employed as a receptionist and clerk by the Connecticut Department of Labor and the Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicles. She was a member of Congregation B’nai Abraham. She was a member and former Treasurer of Sisterhood B’nai Abraham.
She was very active in Meriden Hadassah, and for over 60 years she handled the orders of trees to be planted in Israel in memory of those for whom donations were made from the Greater Meriden Community. Starting with her younger years, she always seemed to be at the center of attention, the life of the party. In her young teens, she attended dancing school with her two sisters, Sydell and Eleanore.
Her sister, Sydell, often said that Flora was dancing through life. She especially loved and enjoyed her last few years of living. She loved to gather with her friends to play canasta and bingo, to attend musical performances and to go on field trips.
She was an Honorary Member of the Kiwanis Club of Meriden and frequently attended club events. Even in her final year of life, whenever she felt like shopping, she would throw her walker onto the back seat of her car, head for the nearby shopping mall, take her walker out and begin her shopping spree. No matter what she did, she seemed to be the life of the party.
She will be sorely missed. Mrs. Shorr is survived by her son, Attorney E. Jack Shorr, of Meriden; her daughter, Rochelle C. Trager and her husband, Attorney Marshall Trager, of Somerset, New Jersey; her daughter, Melinda Beth Shorr, Ph.D. and her husband, Michael Schaeffer, of Merion Station, Pennsylvania; her grandchildren, Jonathan Shorr Trager, Andrew Shorr Trager, Attorney Jason Shorr Trager, Hannah Shorr Schaeffer, and Madelyn Shorr Schaeffer; her sister, Sydell D. Cohan, of Cherry Hill, New Jersey; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Sanford S. Shorr, and her sister, Eleanore Corbin.
The funeral will be held Thursday, January 24th at 12 noon at B’nai Israel Cemetery, Mendon Road, Woonsocket, Rhode Island. Friends and relatives may call upon the family at the Village at Kensington Place home of Flora Shorr, 511 Kensington Avenue, Meriden, Connecticut on the following dates and times: Thursday, January 24, from 6 to 8 p.m.; Friday, January 25 from 12 to 4 p.m.; Saturday, January 26, from 6 to 8 p.m.; and Sunday, January 27 from 12-3 p.m. Donations in memory of Flora D.
