Obituary for Nelson J. Cossette III Nelson J. Cossette III, passed away on Wednesday, January 9, 2019 at Midstate Medical Center. Born on July 18, 1935, he was the son of the late Nelson J. Cossette Jr and Mary Ellen (Fox) Cossette. He attended local schools and graduated from Meriden High School, Class of 1954.

On his sixteenth birthday, Nelson obtained his pilots license and for a while enjoyed the title of the youngest pilot in the state. After working at the Meriden Airport for several years, he joined the Meriden Police Department in 1958 as a supernumerary police officer and was named a regular officer April of 1959. He retired in 2001 after forty-three years of dedicated service to the City of Meriden at the rank of Deputy Chief of Police.

Mr. Cossette rose through the ranks in the department serving in every rank in the patrol division from supernumerary to Deputy Chief. During his career, he received sixteen commendations for outstanding police work and also received the police merit award. Mr. Cossette served in the Connecticut Air National Guard and the United States Air Force Reserve from 1954 to 1961.

He was also a former member of the Civil Air Patrol and the Silver City Flying Club. He graduated from the E.M.T. class at Yale New haven Hospital and from 1974 to 1984, owned and operated the Mayfair Ambulance Service in Wallingford. Mr. Cossette was a member of the Meriden Lions Club since 1982 and served as Chairman of many events.

He also served on the advisory board of High Hopes. The Salvation Army and the now defunct H.E.P. (Help Elderly People) He is survived by his beloved wife Donna (Shoneck) Cossette. He is also survived by his daughter, Cynthia (Gerald) Lemieux of Terryville; granddaughter, Tara (John) Pucci of Southington; great-grandsons, Austin and Colton Pucci; step-daughter, Susan (Jeffrey) Geary of East Hampton; stepson, Robert (Madeline) Baird of Killingworth and step-grandchildren, Andrew, Rachel and Sarah.

He is also survived by his son-in-law, Daniel L. Murphy. He was predeceased by the daughter Lauri A. Cossette Murphy. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a funeral service to be held on Saturday, January 12th at 1 p.m. at the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 E. Main St., Meriden, CT 06450.

Burial will follow in Walnut Grove Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. prior to the service. Donations in his memory may be made to the Meriden Lions Welfare Projects, Inc. P.O. Box 2629 Meriden, CT 06450.
