Bluefield, VA – Floriene A. Austin, 97 of Bluefield, VA passed away on Sunday, January 27, 2019 at Bluefield Regional Medical Center. Floriene was born November 24, 1921 in Amarillo, TX. She was the only child of the late Thomas W. and Hattie Florence Apel Arnold.

She attended public school in Panhandle, TX, graduating from Panhandle Texas High School in 1939. She continued her education at St. Anthony’s School of Nursing in Amarillo, TX graduating in May 1942. She enlisted in the US Army Nurse Corp.

July 1, 1942 and was stationed at Fort Sill, Oklahoma for over a year. In October of 1943 she joined the 162nd Station Hospital for overseas duty in the South West Pacific. She and her unit served for 18 months in 3 different combat areas.

They received the wounded from General MacArthur’s campaigns to liberate the Philippines. Floriene was a lifetime member of the American Legion. Her loving husband of 64 years preceded her in death, May 16, 2009.

She was also preceded in death by their only child, Mary Ann Mortensen on May 10, 1976. Private burial will be in Monte Vista Park Cemetery.
