Obituary for Francis J. “Frank” Uhl Print Francis John “Frank” Uhl, 88, passed away peacefully Tuesday evening, February 12, 2019 at Rome Hospital. Frank was born May 15, 1930 to the late J. Francis and Marion (Lunn) Uhl in Rome. He spent the early years of his life growing up on Depeyster St. before moving to Floyd Ave in his teenage years.
Frank is a graduate of St. Aloysius Academy in Rome. Frank and Sylvia (Kaufman) were married May 30, 1970. Together, they shared a love of the outdoors, socializing with their friends and family and a commitment to their two children, Deborah and Michael.
Frank and his family spent their time camping in the Adirondacks and several vacations visiting the Carolinas, Florida and New England states. Frank started his career with the City of Rome Police Department in 1952 and retired, Captain of Detectives, in early 1991 after 38 ½ years of service. During his time with the department, he continued his love for Judo and instructed those at the department who had interest.
It was a job he loved, respected and spoke highly of. Frank owned and operated Westernville Stage Sporting Goods for over 20 years during which time he built a log cabin, for the business, constructed mostly without power tools. This cabin took him seven years to complete and it was one of many prized accomplishments.
Frank also built the A-frame home he and his family lived in. After Frank retired he attended the Rome YMCA and kept active for many years. Frank would frequently meet with retirees and other close friends at the Beeches Restaurant for coffee.
Frank leaves behind his wife, Sylvia; his son, Michael; his daughters, Deborah and her husband, Eric, and Karyn, and her husband, Mike; grandchildren, Greyson, Mary, James, Alexis, Josh and his wife, Kristina, and Amanda and her husband, Michael; great grandchildren, Kayleigh and Branden; and his former wife, Victoria (Filippini) Ciszek, with whom remained a good family friend. He was predeceased by his two oldest sons, David and Edward. A special thank you to the staff of the 3rd floor staff of the Rome Hospital Residential Unit for their care and compassion.
Thank you also to Rich Hahn for all your help with assisting Frank to get to social outings. Frank’s funeral will be held on Friday at 5 PM at the Barry Funeral Home, 807 W. Chestnut Street. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.
