Carlson, age 82 of Washburn, passed away on Saturday, January 5, 2019 at the Northern Lights Health Care Center in Washburn. He was born on May 3, 1936 in Washburn, the son of Walter and Anne (Haveik) Carlson. He graduated from Bayfield High School in 1956.

Fran started sailing on great lakes ore boats at the age of 18 and was on numerous ships, including the Edmund Fitzgerald. He married Elizabeth “Betty” Zanto on May 10, 1958 in Washburn. Fran worked as the city treasurer for the City of Washburn for 23 years until he retired in 1995.

He also bartended at the Steak Pit in Washburn for many years. Fran especially enjoyed fishing on Lake Superior and was active in the Washburn Beatification Foundation. In his later life, he enjoyed walking his dog and stopping to socialize with many people in the neighborhood.

He is survived by 3 children, Tammy (Tim) Pufall – Washburn, Julie (Tom) Gleeson – Ashland and David (Tracie) Carlson – Cary, NC, 11 grandchildren, Brandon Pufall, Kristin Forsythe, Eric Pufall, Nick Pufall, Jenae Weyer, Dane Gleeson, Kasten Gleeson, and Cody, Tyler, Katie and Brandon Carlson, 5 great-grandchildren, a sister, Lorraine, numerous nieces, nephews and his dog, Buddy. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Betty on November 14, 2006, 4 siblings, Barb Hagstrom, Larry Carlson, LeAnne Merila and Richard Carlson. A private family graveside service will be held at a later date.
