Obituary for Frederick “Fred” A. Kottmyer Jr. Frederick A. “Fred” Kottmyer, Jr., of York, died on June 20, 2018 at his home. He was the husband of Wanda E. (Randle) Kottmyer of York. Born in York on July 27, 1931, he was the son of the late Frederick A. Kottmyer, Sr. and the late Mary (Hoffmaster) Kottmyer.
Fred was a career firefighter for the City of York from 1957 until 1987. He was a 1949 graduate of William Penn Senior High School and served in the United States Navy as a Seabee, stationed in the Aleutian Islands from 1949 until 1953. Fred was a member of Hayshire U.C.C.
He was a life member of the Vigilant Fire Company for 64 years, he was involved in the York Volunteer firefighters Relief Association; was a life member of the Hawk Club and the Vigilant Social Club. Fred was a life member of both the West Manchester VFW Post 7374 and the Shiloh American Legion Post 791. He was a retired member of IAFF Local 627.
He enjoyed woodworking, leather work, artistic painting and was an instructor for CPR. Fred was a longtime advisor of the Explorers Post 610 YFD and coached and managed Lightner Baseball for Boys. Fred loved his wife, sons and grandchildren as well as playing Yahtzee with them, Potter County and hunting, and deep sea fishing.
He also played softball with Vigilant Social Club. In addition to his wife, he is survived by three sons, Frederick Kottmyer, III and his wife, Colleen of York, John Kottmyer and his wife, Jess of Seven Valleys, and Michael Kottmyer and his wife Denise, of Spring Grove; two grandchildren, Joshua and Samantha; three brothers, Charles Kottmyer of York, Freedman Kottmyer of York, and William Kottmyer of Middletown; and two sisters, Betty Jane Messersmith of York and Darlene Keeley of York. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, June 26, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. at the Etzweiler Funeral Homes and Cremation Service, 1111 East Market Street, York.
Viewings will be held on Monday, June 25, 2018 from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and Tuesday from 9:00 a.m. until 10:00 a.m., both at the funeral home. Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery with graveside military rites conducted by the York County Veterans Honor Guard. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Heartland Hospice, 3417 Concord Rd.
