Obituary for Lydia Ann Stitt After enjoying a long and remarkable life, Lydia Ann Stitt (better known as “Nan” to those who knew-and loved-her) returned to her Creator on Monday, June 18, 2018 at the age of 94 years. Nan was one of 3 children born to the late Harry C. Stitt and the late Viola M. (Senft) Stitt of West York Borough, York County, PA. Nan completed her primary and secondary education in the West York School District, graduating in the class of 1941.
She continued her scholastic endeavors by attending Wilson College at Chambersburg, PA, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree as a member of the class of 1945, and followed that achievement with a Master’s degree from the School of Library Science of the Drexel Institute of Technology in 1946, as well as a Master’s degree in Sociology from the University of Pennsylvania in 1950. Not content to wait until the higher education process was completed, Nan began her professional career of choice-librarian- working at the Enoch Pratt Free Library in Baltimore, MD, initially from 1946 to 1949 and again from 1950 to 1955, and then coming home to York to serve the Central York School District as its first professionally-credentialed librarian. During Nan’s tenure, the senior high school library was structurally and operationally reorganized; the library for the newly constructed junior high school was established; and a total of 8 elementary school libraries were subject to her supervision.
Nan took special pride in, and satisfaction from, reports of the successful completion of studies in library science (resulting in degree awards) by a niece, 2 former students and a child’s parent as a result of her influence and motivation. Somehow amid her studies and dedicated pursuit of her professional career, Nan found the time to travel, taking her to most of the United States, as well as numerous European Countries and of particular delight, cruising the Caribbean. She also performed volunteer services for local charitable organizations including the American Red Cross, Martin Memorial Library, York Hospital, and York County Historical Society.
She was a lifelong member of First Presbyterian Church of York, as well as a participant and member of York County Historical Society and it’s Auxiliary; Pennsylvania Association of School Employees and it’s York County chapter; York County Farm and Natural Lands Trust; South Central Pennsylvania Genealogical Society, and Historic York, Inc. Nan is survived by a total of 5 nieces and nephews; Janice E. Little and her husband, Alan; John W. Stitt, and his wife, Janice; Jeffrey L. Orner; Mary A. Brenner; and Kathryn E. Whitacre, and her husband, George; a great nephew, Robert E. Baylor, II and his wife, Melissa and their children: Noah, Lauren, and Liam; and a great niece, Jamie and her husband, Mardey and their children: Maya and Javier. She was preceded in death by her older brother, Harry C. Stitt, Jr., her younger sister, Martha M. Orner; her great niece, Kristin Baylor, and great nephew, Jeremy Brenner. A graveside service will be held Monday, June 25, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at Greenmount Cemetery, 721 Carlisle Avenue, York, PA 17404 with her pastor, the Rev.
Allison Beaulieu, officiating. Family and friends should meet at the cemetery entrance (near the flower shop) at 10:45 a.m. on Monday. To honor and perpetuate the memory and spirit of her great niece, Kristin, Nan has established the Kristin E. Baylor Memorial Fund through the York County Community Foundation, 14 West Market Street, York, PA 17401 and in memory and spirit of her great nephew, Jeremy, has contributed to the Manada Conservancy Preservation Fund, P.O. Box 25, Hummelstown, PA 17036.
Charitable contributions in Nan’s memory may be directed to those entities or to any other charitable organization of your choice. Just like the books and materials she so painstakingly and lovingly kept and managed, Nan was a treasure to all those she encountered, especially her family and friends among them, as well as the caregivers from Deanie King’s Personalized Home Care (especially Trish and Tina) and Caring Hospice Services of Central PA (especially Antonette). Arrangements by the Etzweiler-Koller Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 2000 West Market Street, York, PA 17404.
