George’s Obituary George F. Rowland, 88, of Baldwinsville, NY and Lakeland, FL, went to be with his Lord and Master as a result of declining health over recent years. Born in Syracuse, he was the son of the late Kenneth and Anna (O’Hara) Rowland. After graduation from Onondaga Valley Academy, he attended Indiana University.

In his youth, George was a member of Turner’s Club and Knights of Columbus. He served as past President and Vice President of Baldwinsville Kiwanis. George was an avid skier and instrumental in the design and construction of the East Hill Ski Area.

As a member of the Labrador Ski Patrol he received the National Ski Patrol No. 5018 for exemplary service and skill. Mr. Rowland was a judge for the Central New York Gymnastic Association for college events.

He also co-owned 112 Arabian mares along with Dr. William Kelley. For years he was a member of the Town of Lysander Republican Committee and served as a member of the Lysander Board of Assessment Review. Later he served on the Lysander Planning Board and ultimately spent several terms as a Lysander Town Board Member.

George also loved to golf. He managed security for the Syracuse Golf Classic which attracted many world-famous golfers. Mr. Rowland was a fan of card games.

He often visited Van Duyn and ran bingo games, donating his own money as prizes for the residents. He retired from Union Mutual Life Insurance (UNUM) where he was the General Agent. For many years, George split his time between his home in Baldwinsville and relaxing at his home on Hinckley Reservoir in the Adirondack Park.

He is predeceased by his first wife, Marilyn Rowland in 2015. He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Janis Briggs-Rowland of Baldwinsville, two daughters, Kathleen (Gary) Rake and Lynn (Dan) Sturtz both of DeWitt, two sons, Michael (Vickki) Rowland and Timothy (Anita) Rowland both of Clay, five grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren, brother, Bill (Connie) Rowland and sister, Sally Cole. Also surviving are many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Calling hours will be held on Sunday, March 31, 2019 from 2:00 to 5:00 pm at the Maurer Funeral Home Moyers Corners, 3541 State Rt 31 Baldwinsville. Prayer services will be held on Monday at 10:15 am at the funeral home and 11:00 am in St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church, 3494 State Rt 31 Baldwinsville where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. The Rite of Committal and burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, DeWitt.

In lieu of flowers, Mr. Rowland has requested donations in his name be made to the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105-9959.
