Obituary for Gertrude Banks Gertrude Mattingly Banks 1921-2018 Gertrude Mattingly Banks, age 97 of Winnsboro, Texas, passed away on December 28, 2018 at Autumn Winds Assisted Living in Winnsboro. Born on May 8, 1921, Gertrude was the daughter of James W. and Ida Savannah Hayes Mattingly. She was raised in the Mt.

Vernon community and graduated from Mt. Vernon High School in 1938. Gertrude married Valton Gay Banks on November 4, 1939.

Three children were born to the marriage Marian Banks Perry, Patti Banks Goodrich and Mikeal Jim Banks. She spent her professional life as a hairdresser in Winnsboro on Main Street as the owner and operator of Gertrude’s Beauty Shop. She was a writer, historian, genealogist, world traveler, and state champion bowler.

In addition, she was very proud of being a real-life Rosie the Riveter having worked for North American, the airplane plant in Dallas, helping to build the P-51 Mustangs. Years later, in March of 2010, she was able to ride in a P-51 Mustang named the Betty Jane. Gertrude was a member of Pine Street Baptist Church and the D.A.R. Gertrude is survived by her daughter, Patti Goodrich and husband Dick of Scroggins; son, Mikeal Banks and wife Elaine of Winnsboro, son-in-law, Kenneth Perry of Longview, numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren and a large extended family and loving friends.

Gertrude was preceded in death by her parents, husband of 57 years, Valton Gay, daughter Marian, brothers Leslie Mattingly, Bob Mattingly; sisters, Florine Simms, Lois Banks, Betty Ruth Sechriest, and Lelia Jordan Roberts. Funeral Services for Gertrude Mattingly Banks will be held at Pine Street Baptist Church with Bro. David Holt and Bro.

Charles Ethridge Officiating on Sunday, December 30 with visitation at 2 pm and the service at 3 pm. Burial will follow at the Harmony Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Lee Skidmore, Kevin Cummings, Ronnie Moore, Dax Holt, Cade Hayley, Brett Putman, Micah Spencer and Matt Russell.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Pine Street Baptist Church Teen Group. The family would like to thank the Autumn Winds Assisted Living Staff, Hospice of East Texas and the Seekers Class of Pine Street Baptist Church for helping us care for our Mother and Grandmother.
