Kovar, 85, entered into eternal life on Tuesday, January 8, 2019 at the Hunterdon Care Center in Raritan Township with loving family by his side. Born in Ulysses, NE son of the late Adolph and Agnes (nee Styskal) Kovar, he was raised in David City, NE and then moved to Staten Island, NY where he met the love of his life; he then resided in Hazlet, NJ where he raised his family, then moved to Jackson, NJ and finally settled in with one of his daughters in Readington Township, NJ. Gilbert faithfully served his country with the United States Coast Guard from 1951-1954 during the Korean War.

He was a dedicated foreman at Staley Elevator of New York, NY for twenty-eight years and also the All State Elevator/Company in New York, NY for twenty-five years both before retirement in 1988. Gilbert was an exceptional athlete in almost any sport; he especially loved playing golf and bowling. He was a parishioner at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Roman Catholic Church in Three Bridges, NJ.

Besides his parents, Gilbert was predeceased by a sister, Dorothy Bartlett, a grand daughter, Alana Marie Allorto and a son in law, Jeffrey Hoefler. Gilbert is survived by his beloved wife of fifty-eight years, Lucy Jane (nee McHone) Kovar; eight loving children, Lynn Kovar, Gilbert “Bud” Kovar, Jr., Kathleen Hoefler of Jackson, NJ, William Kovar and his wife Helen of Marlton, NJ, Mary Ellen and her husband Howard Mc Laughlin of Hazlet, NJ, Gregory Kovar of Hazlet, Jennifer Reed and her spouse Kiera Zimmerman, and Kimberly and her husband Richard Allorto, Jr. of Readington Township; dear sister, Gladys Olson and dear brother, Martin Jacobs; seventeen cherished grandchildren; and three adored great grandchildren. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a viewing at Countryside Funeral Home, 724 Route 202 North, Three Bridges, NJ 08887 on Friday, January 11 from 5-8 p.m. and on Saturday, January 12 from 9:45-10:15 a.m. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 12 beginning 10:15 a.m. at the funeral home followed by an 11:00 a.m. funeral liturgy at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Roman Catholic Church in Three Bridges.

Committal words, military honors, and burial of cremains will take place on Tuesday, January 15 at 1:00 p.m. at Fairview Cemetery in Westfield, NJ. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Gilbert’s name to the Alzheimer’s Association, Greater New Jersey Chapter, 23 Vreeland Road, Suite 105, Florham Park, NJ 07932; a charity dear to Gilbert’s heart due to his wife’s Alzheimer’s disease.
