Obituary for Gus Burkle Harris Mr. Gus Burkle Harris, age 85, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday (November 14, 2018) at his home, surrounded by his loved ones. Born March 13, 1933 in Venia, Virginia, he was a son of the late James Harvey and Emma Catherine Barton Harris. He had served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War era.

After returning home, he worked in the coalfields for Clinchfield Coal Company for over thirty years and was a member of the UMWA. He was a devoted husband, loving father, a dear grandfather, and a favored neighbor. He will be missed by many.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Troy Harris, Taze Harris, and “Deck” Harris, two sisters, Ruby Harris and Mary Terrell; wives, Judy Harris and Georgia Harris, special friend, Nora Lester; and his pride and joy, his only son, Danny Harris. Survivors include five sisters, Lucy, Bertha, Maxie, Villa, and Shirley; one brother, Robert; his only granddaughter, Jessica Wheatley and husband, Michael of Wise; grandson, Gabe Harris and wife, Maygen of Boones Mill, Virginia, Zachary Harris of Piney Flats, Tennessee; four great-grandchildren, Victoria, Andrew and Alexander Wheatley and Sterling Harris. The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff of Legacy Hospice for their outstanding care and support.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 AM Saturday in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Troy Harris and Rev. Guy Harris officiating.

UMWA Honors will be conducted by UMWA Sub-28 Chaplain Corp. Interment will follow at the Harris Family Cemetery on Fletcher’s Ridge, Virginia with Military Graveside Honors provided by the American Veteran’s Honor Guard. Relatives and friends will serve as pallbearers.
