Obituary for Harry Barney Swayze Harry “Barney” Swayze, 91, of Phillipsburg, New Jersey, passed away quietly on December 1, 2018. Harry Swayze, better known throughout the town of Phillipsburg as “Barney”, was born, raised and died in his beloved town of Phillipsburg, NJ. Barney was very well known throughout the town of Phillipsburg and could not travel anywhere in P’Burg or downtown Easton without being recognized and greeted by his many friends and acquaintances.
As a graduate of Phillipsburg High School, Barney bled Garnet and Gray and loved his Stateliner’s beyond measure. He attended every P’Burg home football game and would truly become depressed and ill should they lose to Easton on Thanksgiving Day. But, for as much as Barney loved the Town of Phillipsburg, he certainly loved his Country just as much.
Harry proudly served his Country in WWII serving in the US Navy as a Seabee stationed in Okinawa, Japan. He flew the flag every day at his “Pursel Hill” home and attended every Memorial Day and Veteran’s Day celebration possible. Barney’s recognition was also due in large part to his having worked at many local establishments over the years as a bartender/clerk.
Some of these places, now also gone, included Guy’s Bar, The Pub and Family Liquor Store. Barney always hoped to be remembered as a simple man who paid his bills, loved his friends, his pets (Prince), his town and his Country! Barney is proceeded in death by his Father, Harry F. Swayze (1885-1951), his Mother, Elizabeth “Lizzie” Smith Swayze (1894-1950), his brother, Thomas B. Swayze (1924-1986), and his sister, Dorothy M. Swayze (1917-1934).
