Abby Militano August 23, 1988 – January 15, 2019 Share this obituary Send Sympathy Gifts Sign Guestbook| Send Sympathy Card| Memorial Donation Abby Militano, 30, most recently of Highland Park, NJ passed away on Tuesday, January 15, 2019. Born August 23,1988 in Staten Island, NY she was the free spirited and loving daughter of Tony and Eileen (McEvoy) Militano of Holland Township, NJ. She was a 2006 graduate of Delaware Valley Regional High School and grew up in Holland Township.

Afterwards she attended Ohio University in Athens, OH and graduated in 2010 with a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish. She then spent two years teaching English in Spain from 2010-2012 in Galicia and Malaga respectively with the North American Cultural Ambassadors’ Program. Abby returned home to New Jersey with a desire to share her passion for the Spanish culture and language which led her to Princeton Day School where she proudly taught middle school Spanish for the last 5 1/2 years.

Abby had a passion and zest for life which brought her back to Spain in 2015 to run with the bulls at The Festival of San Fermin in Pamplona. She had a diverse and passionate taste for music that spanned many genres including jazz, rock, hip hop and Spanish serenades. She had a charismatic energy that left an impression on everyone she met which leaves us with memories of laughter that will last a lifetime.

In 2016, Abby made a bold and brave decision to live life as her truest self and came out to her family and friends as a transgender woman. Upon hearing the news of Abby’s passing people have described her as a “vibrant and luminous spirit” and having a “passionate heart and piercing mind”. In addition to her parents she is survived by a sister Alison Militano, and husband Kyle Hoomans; nephew Quinn Hoomans; and grandparents Anthony and Theresa Militano.

She is predeceased by grandparents John William and Madeline McEvoy. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, the family is asking for donations to the Trevor Project, a charity dedicated to providing support and interventions for LGBTQ youth in crisis.
