Obituary for Harvey L. Vredeveld Harvey L. Vredeveld, 85, died at home on November 30, 2018, after a very brief illness. He leaves behind his beloved wife of 60 years, Joan (Huizenga) Vredeveld; his children, Sharon Newton (Steve), Bradley Vredeveld (Haiying Gan), Linda Vredeveld (Eric Shultis), and Kevin Vredeveld (Laura); his grandchildren Aaron Newton (Brandi Swan), Charles Newton, Leo Vredeveld, Arlo Shultis, Zora Vredeveld, Samantha Clay (Jacob), Claudia Vredeveld, Mitchell Vredeveld. Harvey was born on 3/3/33 in Jenison, Michigan, (one of seven children) to Clarence and Elizabeth (De Weerd) Vredeveld.

He graduated from Grand Rapids Christian High School, Calvin College (AB in physics and mathematics), and The University of Michigan (MS in physics). He met and married fellow Calvin graduate Joan Vredeveld in California where he began his long and impressive career in science and technology by working for Douglas Aircraft, Lawrence Livermore National Labs, and, after a move to Michigan, for Bendix Aerospace Systems, Cutler-Hammer, and Ann Arbor Computer. Intelligent and thoughtful, gentle and wise, he was known for his generosity and problem-solving capabilities.

He volunteered countless hours, especially in retirement, to Ann Arbor Christian Reformed Church, Worldwide Labs, Ann Arbor Christian School, International Students Incorporated, and was active in his children’s and grandchildren’s lives. He served as an elder at his church, sang for years in the choir, and was active on the facilities committee. He and Joan enjoyed hosting people from many different cultures and countries, and have friends far and wide.

An avid reader, he was interested in many subjects and was informed in areas from politics to theology. Active and energetic, he could still ride a bike, climb on ladders, and sled down hills into his eighties. He will be missed greatly on this earth.
