Marie Solange Dubreuil was born on August 9, 1942 in Croix des Bouquets, Haiti. She is the fourth and youngest daughter of the late Hermann and Octavie Cantave. Marie Solange attended elementary, middle and high school in Haiti.
She enjoyed school and loved to read. During her childhood, “So” forged a special relationship with her friend, Antoine Dubreuil. Their friendship flourished over the years and in 1966 she married her life-partner in Haiti.
Winter of 1966 both Marie and Antoine emigrated to the United States to pursue a better life in New York. Marie Solange and Antoine were married for 52 wonderful years. Together they lovingly raised two daughters, Sophia & Valerie.
Marie Solange began and ended her 28-year work career as a Data Entry Specialist at McGraw-Hill Publishing Company in NYC. Daily she happily took the bus from Long Island to Queens then boarded the train to the Big Apple. She enjoyed her job and loved sharing laughs with her two special friends Elaine Williams and Judy Robles.
Marie was a dedicated member of St. Martha’s Catholic Church in Uniondale, NY where she served as a Eucharistic Minister and was an active member of Haitian Ministry. Anyone that knows Marie knows that she adored her church and her church family. She was also an active member of the community-based organization Haitian American Family of Long Island (HAFALI) which helped bridge a connection between the Haitian Community and the community at large.
Upon moving to Michigan in 2005, she became a member at St. Francis of Assisi Church and served there as well. Marie’s love for her five grandchildren was limitless. She poured love into those children through prayer, physical care, hugs and countless teachable moments.
She loved nothing more than to be with them. After several years battling with Alzheimer’s, heaven sent angels down and gave Marie her wings on January 20, 2019. Marie was welcomed into paradise by parents Hermann and Octavie Cantave, sister Marie-Andre Remy and many extended family members and friends.
Marie will be lovingly remembered by her husband, Antoine Dubreuil; daughters, Sophia Dubreuil; Valerie Dubreuil Bussey (Gordon); grandchildren Alexis “Lexi” Dubreuil, Jordan Dubreuil, Gordon “Tre” Bussey III, Jackson “JC” Bussey and Miles Bussey; siblings, Frida Hill and Michel Cantave; nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of other relatives and friends. Sometimes it’s hard to understand why some things have to be, but in His wisdom, God has planned beyond our power to see. So looking back in tenderness along the path we’ve trod; We cherish the years we had with you and leave the rest to God.
