Herbert’s Obituary CHILHOWIE, VA Herbert Harrison Chambers, 83, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, February 10, 2019 at 2 pm at his home in Chilhowie, Virginia following a short illness. He retired from the Virginia State Police in July, 1994 after almost 31 years, serving first as a Trooper stationed in Marion, VA, and later as an Investigator and Special Agent in Charge in Appomattox, VA. He had always wanted to be a member of the Virginia State Police and was well respected by his colleagues.

Herb’s hobbies were restoring classic cars, genealogy, and pickin’ and grinnin’, and he loved using his talent to bring pleasure to others. He was an avid gardener who always shared the fruits of his labor with friends and neighbors. He never met a stranger, and more often than not he’d have a joke in his pocket to make people laugh and a hand to lend for whatever was needed.

He was a dedicated husband and father first and foremost, and treasured every moment he spent with his family. He touched the lives of many in his community, including members of the Grosses Creek Baptist Church, Chilhowie Lions Club, Chilhowie Masonic Lodge No. 250, the Konnarock Retreat House, and many other friends in Smyth County, Appomattox, and Portsmouth, Virginia.

He was especially active in the Chilhowie Lions Club, serving as Club President for three terms and holding many additional administrative offices. During his Presidency he helped spearhead the organizing of two LEO Clubs, the teenage version of the Lions Club, that continue to be active today. Throughout his years of membership, he was a leader in community, state, and international Lions Club activities, especially in the area of eyeglasses collection and recycling.

Herb is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years, Patsy A. Chambers; daughters Sandy Chambers of Charlotte, NC and Kathy Chambers of Nashville, TN; grandson Alex Losskarn, granddaughter and husband Isabella Losskarn and John Gelder; and many nieces, nephews, and other cherished family members. His parents, Joseph and Minnie Chambers, née Blackburn, of Konnarock, VA and his brothers and sisters preceded him in death. Visitation with the family and a celebration of his life will be held Bradley’s Funeral Chapel, 307 Old Stage Road, Chilhowie, VA.

Visitation will be on Tuesday, February 12 from 5:30-7:00PM with a celebration of his life immediately following with Pastor George Jessee officiating. The burial service will be on Wednesday, February 13 at 11:00AM at Wassum Cemetery in Atkins with honors rendered by the Virginia State Police Honor Guard. Family and friends are asked to meet at the funeral home at 10:00AM for the procession to the cemetery.

A luncheon will follow at Grosses Creek Baptist Church in Chilhowie. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Grosses Creek Baptist Church Building Fund, 307 Grosses Creek Road, Chilhowie, VA 24319. Expressions of sympathy may be sent to the family at www.
