Obituary of Herbert Arnold Herbert Wesley Arnold, of Roanoke passed away Friday, February 15, 2019 at Pheasant Ridge Memory Care in Roanoke surrounded by his loving family after battling Dementia. Herbert was born July 17, 1941 to Carol and Vera Arnold in Greenville, Missouri, the fifth oldest of 6 children. He joined the United States Army at age 17 and served his country in times of peace and conflict.

He met his beautiful bride and wife of 57 years, Norma Sue Osborne, while stationed in Washington, DC and they were later married in Murfreesboro, North Carolina. Together they had three children, Steven Arnold, Susan Arnold Hite, and Jason Arnold. After honorably serving 20 years in the Army as a Military Police Officer, he retired at the rank of Sergeant First Class and then began working for the Newport News Shipbuilding Company in Newport News, Virginia.

He retired from the shipyard after 24 years. Apart from his 2 careers, Herbert enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. In his spare time he loved to work with wood making everything from shelves to toy boxes, and later in life working alongside his nephew, Morris Campbell, remodeling homes.

Herbert is survived by his wife, Sue Arnold; his children and their spouses, Steven and Lawana Arnold, Susan and Jerry Hite, and Jason Arnold and Jerry Dimmery; grandchildren, Sydney Moore, Erin Moore, David Arnold, and Steven Arnold; sisters-in-law, Phyllis Campbell, Gerry Lovejoy, Donna Smith, and Barbara Mabe; brothers, James Arnold and Robert Arnold; brothers-in-law, Kenny Osborne and Thurman Osborne; and numerous nieces and nephews. Herbert was preceded in death by his parents Carol and Vera Arnold, his inlaws, James and Eula Osborne, his older sister, Dorothy Scott, and two brothers, Lonnie and Jerry. Herbert was cared for in his final days by the warm and compassionate staff at Pheasant Ridge Memory Care and Good Samaritan Hospice of Roanoke.

Out of respect for family members with allergies, in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Good Samaritan Hospice 2408 Electric Road Roanoke, VA 24018 or to the Alzheimer’s Association. Funeral services will be conducted 3 p.m. Monday, February 18, 2019 at Simpson Funeral Home 5160 Peters Creek Road by Pastor Doug Sasser. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

A graveside service with military honors will be conducted 1 p.m. Wednesday, February 20, 2019 in Peninsula Memorial Park 12750 Warwick Boulevard Newport News, Va Arrangements by Simpson Funeral Home.
