Rachel’s Obituary Rachel L. Jordan, 66, of Sanford, FL, transitioned to her heavenly home on Monday, February 4, 2019, at Hospice of the Comforter in Altamonte Springs, FL. Rachel was born in Martinsville, VA on December 15, 1952. She was the daughter of the late Mary Hailey Lampkins and Rash Edward Lampkins of Martinsville, VA.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son, Michael O. Jordan (who died in infancy) and brother, Michael C. Lampkins. Rachel was a graduate of Martinsville High School, Class of 1971. Upon graduation she attended Duke University, Raleigh, NC, and Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond, VA.

Rachel met her soul mate, Otis Jordan on November 25, 1978, in Martinsville, VA. Rachel and Otis successfully endured a long-distance relationship for two years. They were married on October 9, 1982, in Martinsville, VA.

They lived in East Hartford, CT for over 18 years. While residing in East Hartford, CT, Rachel worked for corporations such as Cigna Insurance Company and Connecticut Bank and Trust. In 1994, Rachel and Otis relocated to “Star City” (Roanoke, VA) where she remained for 19 years.

While in Roanoke she worked at Sears, the Girl Scouts of Virginia Skyline Council, and Advanced Auto Parts. Rachel served as secretary and then Vice President on the board for the Harrison Museum for African-American Culture for several years. She also served as co-chair for the Henry Street Festival and Local Colors.

Rachel was fulfilled spiritually by being an active member of Ebenezer A.M.E. Church where she sang in the Women’s Choir and served on the Stewardess Board. In 2013, Rachel and Otis relocated to Sanford, Florida. Rachel transferred her membership to Allen Chapel A.M.E. Church in Sanford.

While at Allen Chapel, Rachel proudly served in the Sick & Shut-In Ministry. She worked at Frontline Insurance Company before becoming ill. Rachel had an exceptional gift of serving her community, working in the church, and caring for others.

The word “NO” did not exist for her. She took pride in volunteering to deliver daffodils for the American Cancer Society’s “Daffodil Days” event. Rachel also served as president of the “Quettes” (wives of the men of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., who are committed to serving as a model of Excellence, Teamwork, and Friendship with the intent of enriching the principles as a means of incorporating family and eloquence) for several years.

Although Rachel took pride in serving others, she was most proud of being a “Super-Mummie” to Ebony, Carlos, Monte’, and Omar and a loving wife to Otis. She attended every sporting event the children were involved and fraternity event with her husband, Otis. Rachel leaves to cherish in memory her husband, Otis Jordan, of Sanford, FL; a daughter, Ebony (Darryl) Fleming; sons, Carlos (Bridget) Jordan, of Roanoke, VA, Omar (Amy) Jordan, of Rocky Mount, VA and Christopher (Hope) Jordan, of Fort Worth, TX; three grandsons, Carlos Jordan, Braden Hodges, and Brandon Smith; four granddaughters, De’sia Terry, Israel, Angel, and Lleidy Jordan.

In addition, she is survived by one brother, Ronald (Patricia) Lampkin, of Martinsville, VA; three aunts, Mable H. Mullins, Arnetha D. Hailey and Frances M. Hailey; one uncle, Beverly R. Miller and two special godsons, Branden and Kashden Naraine. She leaves six specials friends (sisters) to cherish her memory, Jill Naraine, Bonnie Draper, Ruth (Nonie) Collins, Darlene Demarest, Lorene Williams and Deidre Jones; a host of other family and friends. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Florida Hospital Foundation, 550 East Rollins Street, 6th Floor, Orlando, FL 32803.

Donations are to be made In Memory of Rachel Jordan. The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, February 15, 2019, at Hamlar-Curtis Funeral Home. A Celebration of Life Service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, February 16, 2019, at St. Paul High Street Baptist Church, Martinsville, VA.
